Dune HD Realbox 4K Feedback
« on: May 21, 2020, 08:29:51 AM »
The first test results of the new Dune HD Realbox 4K are already showing up.
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/39-networking-media-servers-content-streaming/3142112-dune-hd-realbox-4k-rtd1395-thread.html
What is really good news that nobody reported any kind of instabilities even giving the box a hard time. This is amazing for a new SOC. So porting FW the Dune way using its own GUI/OS seems to work out very well here.

It has above all a few quirks you need to know but then does more or less everything promised on its initial factory FW release including exact frame-rates, HDR10+ new SOC related goodies. Good expectation for HD Pro 4K II (Plus) which should be blazing fast compared.

Reader arrived in France very quickly ...... thanks to FUTEKO !!

Well yesterday I spent about ten hours, grinding it in all directions. I tried all the possible settings and especially watched the series and film in 4K!

My installation is special, but it is done, from readers to two diffusers, so that the image quality is at its peak (calibration with test patterns and my eyes). For me the image quality goes above all other criteria ......

Let's start with the annoying problem: the image quality, at first glance it is very beautiful, but very quickly in the interior or dark parts of a film, a 'posterization' effect appears especially on my SAMSUNG 82Q950 in 8K, Which for me is irremediable. In projection on my EPSON LASER EH LS 10000, no posterization but a curious image a bit like an almost unreal 'ghost' effect, finally not easy to explain.

This problem I compare with my HIMEDIA Q5 4K and my APPLE TV 4K, which do not have this effect on the screen ..................... so for I'm going to go 'green' for a while while waiting for the next major update, because currently there have been only two minor 'beta' ...........

And that's a shame, because the device is very responsive, stable, perfect auto framerate, reading ISO BD and BD 4K nickel, responsive cover software because on practically 4000 covers I had to search for it (very easily) Ten and about the same in the covers with film error!

So camera rather well born ................... on one condition that this image problem is corrected .............. ...... I leave him a year to know which reader I keep!

Can you provide an example/scene from a movie so we can check that as well?

., I have the RealBox and looking good so far. If you are in touch with Dune can you feedback the following to start with.

1. It would be nice if the front display could be changed to show time remaining rather than just elapsed on a movie. Other manufacturers do this.
2. I have two movies in my collection called Aftermath and a third called “The Aftermath”. Somebody has wrongly associated “The Aftermath” with one of the former two in the Dune database. So when I scrape “The Aftermath” it thinks it is one of the other two, which I already have scraped, and therefore does not show in my collection. It just doesn’t appear. I think it is affecting other movies as well and there needs to be a way to correct this.

More ............ my image problem comes only on UHD HDR, because HDR does not connect and gives this curious image !!

So big problem with HDR ............ let's wait for a correction from DUNE, hoping that it comes quickly!

Check your HDMI cables.
No one else is experiencing such issues.

It would also be nice if you could provide specific scenes and timestamps.

Thanks ..

You have the option to manually input IMDB's movie number.
Why don't you do it this way?

don't think it comes from my cables:
'Belkin Premium Ultra HD HDMI High Speed Cable, 4K / Dolby Vision HDR10 +, Ideal for Apple TV, 2 m'

Besides with the same cable on HIMEDIA Q5 ...... no problem!
On the DUNE for HDR I tried the three different settings without success!

PS: camera broken down!

About HDR I am not alone a post on 'AVS FORUM' say:
""""""""""""Secondly, and probably more importantly, the only way to convince the box to output HDR is to set it to convert SDR to HDR, so it's full time HDR or nothing!!

If you set HDR to "auto" as most will want to, when playing HDR material it will output mostly zeros in the SEI message (as seen on the Vertex), so staying in SDR obviously resulting in the low contrast washed out presentation you get when showing HDR on an SDR monitor.

This is going to confuse a lot of people, particularly if you don't have an HDFury device to figure out what's actually going on.

So if you set HDR to "Convert SDR to HDR" this will output a valid SEI and switch to HDR, but obviously it will "convert" 709 SDR to 2020 HDR which is not really desirable.

(HDR to SDR is pretty awful, so not really worth mentioning).

And as for HDR metadata - wow!

Let's say that sometimes it works, mostly it doesn't, but it's hellishly confusing.""""""""

That is not true. The user revised when he connected his Vertex 2 unit.

I have a Vertex unit and can confirm that the only issue existing is when the player outputs @ 12bit & 4/2/0.
When this happens, you get 24.00 fps instead of 23.976.
But if you select EDID and as content this never happens.

HDR metadata are also transmitted.

What is your HDMI chain?
Did you try with different cables?

Here is the first Realbox 4K review at mediaplayers.gr http://mediaplayers.gr/dune-hd-realbox-4k/

You have the option to manually input IMDB's movie number.
Why don't you do it this way?
Because the movies does not show, since I already have Aftermath in MyCollection. The software thinks it is already scraped.
