EXT4 is the better choice. It would be nice if you could test GPT with NTFS also? A quick format will do.

Seagate drives in general have a higher throughput than Western Digital drives but they tend to vibrate a lot resulting in noise.
Prefer WD for that reason. Inside  my PC I am using a Seagate for speed.

It is a pity for ST8000AS0002 as the price/TB is nice.

Sorry, but the drives are not empty.  The one and only reason for NTFS is the compatibility with Windows.
The speed of the Seagate Archive is about 30MB/sec, that's very low. It works like a saw mill and it loses 2700 sectors in 17 hours. The only reason for me is the price/TB.
I prefere WD RED for server reasons => high stability, silent and low temperature.

Q 10 PRO

Test the internal bay with:

Seagate Archive  - 8TB gpt EXT3 => o.k.
Seagate Archive ST8000AS0002 - 8TB gpt EXT4 => o.k.

Seagate hdd are very loud. Not suitable for mediaplayer, only archive.

Always formated with gparted.

Thanks for sharing with us!

I run 4x Seagate drives (Seagate ST4000VN000-1H4168) in my Qnap NAS

It's a Toshiba  X300. You're more knowledgeable than me but I can't understand why it won't work.

Please connect it via (E)SATA to a Windows PC and execute the "fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo x:" command. Then we can say something.
My own Q10 Pro is still floating around somewhere.

Can't find the details needed. It is a recent high-end model like WD Black and seems to be made by WD too (internal type number).
So the likelihood that it is a Native 4K HDD is fairly high.

sorry about delay been buisy
hopefully this info may be of some use to you

As one can see this is a standard Advanced Format drive of 4.000.650.886.656 Bytes size (= 512 x Number Sectors). This should work normally.
Be sure to attach it via (E)SATA to a Windows PC and re-format it default with GPT and NTFS.
I have never seen consistent good result with other programs or other OS performing a NTFS format for deployment in media players.
I don't recall "Bytes Per FileRecord Segment    :  1024" as being default e.g. Will do a show of a working  4 TB drive when back home again.

i have a Q10 pro on pre-order and thought i would get a new 4tb hdd  for it.
does anyone know if the Toshiba  X300 4TB 7200RPM 128MB Cache is compatible i presume it will be fine just want to make sure before i hit the buy button.
Crow.
Were you able to use your Toshiba X300 disc internally in the Q10P.
I await your conclusions before ordering.
My criterion for this drive is its 128MB cache (and its speed).

Thank you for the info back

To all, if you have good arguments on acquiring another 4TB, I'm interested.

merci  ;)

In the end, I put a WD Red Internal Hard Drive (Bulk) NASware 3.0, 4 TB 3.5 "SATA IntelliPower. It works great!  ;)

I can confirm an HGST 4Tb Deskstar NAS drive also works fine  :D
I use these drives in my 7 bay Thecus NAS as well (so it is always good to have a spare for later).

As per the separate tutorial thread, it is easy to install the drive and plug the Q10 Pro into a PC using the rear USB 3.0 port.
This allows standard GPT partitioning and NTFS 4k formatting (under Windows).  It is seen by Windows as an external hard drive, once formatted.
This makes for fast file transfers.

One thing we got occasionally with the Q10 4K3D was the SATA connector not being pushed fully into the HDD SATA port. It might seem a simple thing, but we've had several instances of that being the problem.

Is the HDD receiving power, can you hear it spin? If you can't then it might suggest the above.

Just a note that I experienced the HDD not spinning up with my Q10 pro.  I've worked with SATA drives for years and in my Q10 pro the connector just would not insert fully if I simply inserted the drive flat.  I tried a 2.5" drive which worked fine but I still struggled to push in the SATA port.  When I did it worked just fine so anyone that has an extra 2.5" drive you are good to go.

In my case I had to angle the 3.5" drive towards the SATA connector and then push firmly.  Then the HDD spun up and was recognized just fine.  I hope this helps anyone who is having difficulty.

That is good advice. We've had users report HDDs not working in HiMedia products with same casing as Q10 Pro (Q10 4K3D / 900B) going back years. The SATA connector needs pushing firmly into the drive.

If you can't get it to fit then the two screws on top of the connector can safely be removed so the connector can be better manipulated.
