HiMedia Q10 Pro (Release Box) Impressions
« on: April 13, 2016, 12:27:58 AM »
April 17 update: Full review and new video have now been posted.

Some early impressions... I'm already mostly impressed! Compared to pre-production sample I've had since February, the production (mass release) box just coming out now...
  • Does everything well that the pre-production sample does; a relief!
  • Does NOT have HiMediaWrapper pre-installed! (The APK HiMedia provided me for the pre-production sample thankfully works w/production box, but they should really pre-install this and provide it for download)
  • Does perfect DD+ 5.1 and 7.1 bitstreaming (which the pre-production sample only passed standard DD5.1 for)
  • Still can't flip eyes for right-eye first 3D BD's (just as w/pre-production sample; HiMedia, please fix this!)
  • Kodi 17 nightlies install fine, but the 'back' function does NOT work. So, had to use Kodi 16 RC2 instead for now

Can you show some photos of the front LCD display with the various segments lit up ..... ie the different audio/video signal identification ?

Thanks

Halfway through my tests... Q10 Pro is a winner! Only real issue so far? Left/right eye-swap for 3D not working as I already mentioned.

Full review will be posted here by close of Friday USA EDT, with a new video demo!

4K is awesome. 3D is awesome. Plays even 300Mbps bitrate clip w/o a sweat! No real-world 4K will ever go that high! PQ is an 'A'. HiMedia has (almost) hit it out of the park w/this box!

Other bug I've seen so far is that 10-bit HDR videos won't play (audio, but no video). My 4K TV is 8-bit w/o HDR, but Q10 Pro should still downsample and display 10-bit HDR. It did w/my pre-production sample on a previous firmware.

I tested my Q10 Pro last night. Everything is ok and smooth, heavy game play smooth as well (e.g Asphalt 8). However, the color on the tivi does not satisfy me. Is there any way we can adjust color so that it look more deep and bold?

Games are not really what Q10 Pro is best suited for... rather, optimal video playback! Anyway, try playing w/Imprex Engine 2.0 settings. There's a vibrant or game mode if I recall correctly that boosts contrast and saturation. Just don't use this for videos.

Thanks, I'll try Imprex Engine after work today. I heard about Imprex Engine already and I thought that it's just on as default. Overall, this box is really good at this price (154$). The default himedia player already satisfy me with passthrough capacity for every kind of audio format (DD plus, Ex, true HD, Atmos), all has been shown by my receiver. 3D iso a bit stutter but for my home theater system, full HD is the only target.

Just one more thing, some of Androids box can be set in standby mode by pressing red power button on remote, is there any way that I can enable this feature instead of boot from the beginning all the time.

According to a Chinese evaluation it consumed 5 W in Sleep mode. Idle mode was measured at 7 W so leaving it powered on has almost the same effect. Within Europe (and probably US too) that is not allowed anymore and it must be shutdown as it may  consume max. 1 W in standby.  I will measure this when I get the box.
It seems this SoC was not really designed for low power consumption, but more for optional performance.  The FAN is essential also as a consequence even without an Internal HDD.

Special attention for BD-3D ISO evaluation please as that seems to be the main weak point at the moment:
- Bit of stuttering?
- Left eye - right eye option missing
- Audio gradually moving out of sync

I want to ask how does the PQ in FullHD compares with the Himedia 900b that uses the Realtek chip.I have a Pioneer plasma TV so my main concern for now is only the quality of the picture in FullHd.

In my opinion Q5/Q10 Pro picture quality is significantly better than 900B, or any other of the Realtek based media players.
