Decoding audio Dolby TrueHD
« on: October 13, 2015, 05:46:40 PM »
Hi,

is there a problem to decode Dolby TrueHD in MKV container?
1) Need_For_Speed.mkv (DTS Master Audio, English, 7.1 channels, 24 bits, 48kHz) - it works -> LINEAR PCM [2/0]
2) Mission_Impossible_-_Ghost_Protocol.mkv (TrueHD, English, 7.1 channels, 48kHz) - it doesn't work - no audio
3) Catwoman.m2ts (TrueHD/AC3, English, 5.1 channels, 48kHz, dialnorm: -27dB) - it works -> LINEAR PCM [2/0]
4) John_Wick.m2ts (TrueHD/AC3 (Atmos), English, 7.1 channels, 48kHz) - it works -> LINEAR PCM [2/0]

As far as I know it is not possible to acheive 3/2.1 (6 channels) or 3/4.1 (8 channels) PCM, but what about at least a stereo?
It's a little mess in the settings about audio bitstream/decoding, but this is another discussion.

Regards

I use always audio out = AMP, I known that if I choose AMP+TV both AMP and TV should maintain the required scheme.
And the option RAW7.1 bitstream HD Audio (i.e. Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, while the option RAW5.1 bitstream standard audio (DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1).
I can't understand what is the relation of your advice? :)

I also find that True-HD will not decode to PCM stereo. I'll reply again tomorrow with a response from Himedia.

Just for the record:
multichannel PCM is it not possible i.e. HiSillicon doesn't support it
or
it is a firmware restriction i.e. Himedia are decided ?

Himedia are looking into the True-HD not decoding to 2 channel PCM problem.

I think it's surprised them that it doesn't work, maybe people haven't reported it before because a lot of rips will have both True-HD and AC3 audio tracks (in which case the AC3 would be decoded so no problem) and people with 7.1 audio rips are likely to want it passed as 7.1, not 2 channel PCM. I expect Himedia will fix it.

Hi,

I also remember it works on 1.0.8, but

1) what should be the settings for PCM output because I always see PCM 2/0 (stereo) on my receiver?

2) for the record - my previous player (Dune HD) was able to decode Dolby TrueHD only in m2ts container,
when it was MKV it only can bitstream it and after a lot of tests I've noticed that if movie is Bluray ISO
it also works in decode mode (somewhere in internet I've read that is license problem, not a hardware)
so I decided to test also on my Q5

Himedia say that decode to 2 channel PCM is not supported for True-HD audio tracks. It is supported when there is also an AC3 track present. This is on a hardware level so is unlikely to be fixed/changed. I don't think 1.0.8 would be any different to other firmwares in this respect.

They also say that multi-channel LPCM is supported, but I'm not sure. I will test later and would appreciate any testing anyone reading this would like to do. Settings would be HDMI Output 'LPCM'. Whether or not the setting for HBR Ouput matters or not before it's greyed needs testing.

:) I was expecting multichannel PCM, not only 2 channels. Of course the ability of decoding multichannel or stereo PCM is welcomed.

1) or I've mistaken in previous tests
2) or software is fixed and PCM 5.1 in MKV works when HBR=RAW7.1 and HDMI=LPCM

Hi all,

I've returned to 1.0.8 and tested - same result container = MKV, audio = Dolby TrueHD, result = PCM decoding => no audio
i.e. same result as 3.0.1, so we wait Himedia answer and maybe fixed problem in next version.

what do you mean with DTS-HD MA (5/2.1) and Dolby TrueHD (3/4.1)?

with RAW and RAW7.1 i never have problem, A/V reciver show 7.1 DTS-HD MA/Dolby TrueHD.

which file do you have tested? this?

1) I mean with (5/2.1) and (3/4.1) the same 7.1 - the exact channel/speaker location than my receiver writes on its display
2) No. I've 3 disks each is 4 TB :) and should have enough movies to test - don't need an example to test it ;)

Try with MKV container and Dolby TrueHD and will have a problem, I know that there is no problem with DTS-HD (it has an official core even in MKV container) :)
The topic is for decoding of Dolby TrueHD.
