Factory reset out of the blue (third time today!)
« on: January 28, 2018, 01:05:58 AM »
This never happened before - my box suddenly crashes and factory resets itself (completely wipes the internal storage). This is the third time today. The first two times I thought it was maybe because I added the 'Persistent mountpoints for SAMBA / NFS Shares' but the third time I only installed some apps from the Playstore and when I opened a page from Firefox (maybe that's the problem?) the box crashed and factory resets itself again.  I'm on firmware 2.0.7 (Q10 Pro).

Anyone also have this problem?

I didn't have the same issue but Firefox is definitely doing something as my Q5 box slows down significantly when I used it before...i got rid of it and sticking with chrome for now. Not sure if it's your issue but worth a try.

Installed everything again and it's stil working (fingers crossed). Strange that Firefox triggers a hard reset and wipes everything!

I have the same problem.

After a reboot it gets stuck on the Himedia logo for a while and then boots on factory setup having the local memory wiped (ie hard reset i think its called?).  I have had this happen for about 4-5 times in a year now with different firmware versions and it drives me up the wall.

This makes the device useless for me, especially combined with this issue as well

I bought the device of this website nearly 2 years ago.
Current firmware version is 2.0.7.
Setup is 3 external USB drives + an internal drive in the bay (no network drives or NAS)
Installed apps (besides the default firmware apps) were the updated Kodi app and Spotify.
I also use the mount storage patch as well as the remove control patch

Because the hard reset happens randomly I couldn't replicate this issue yet.

Any help?

I never had this problem before but experienced this factory reset with the 2.0.7 firmware (I happened 4 times - really frustrating) . Don't think it's because of the patches because the last 2 resets I didn't use the patches.
I now use the custom firmware and It is still running! So maybe switch to the custom firmware?

That would also be my suggestion. Depending on what sort of USB drives you have running (powered/unpowered, physical/flash), 3 external USB drives and an internal 3.5" HDD is a lot to run off the Q10 Pro PSU. Another solution would be to make sure the USB drives have their own power source (powered USB hub).

Don't think that's the problem. I didn't use USB drives and I had 4 factory resets in 1 week. Now (with the custom firmware) it's running for 2 weeks without resets.

Thanks for the replies.  :)

Sorry, I forgot to mention that all 3 external drives (Western Digital 2TB) have their own power supply and are no 'portables', so they do not use the Q10 for power.

However, I am still wondering how a (faulty) power supply can result in a hard reset. PSU related or not, an error while booting the device should not 'simply' result in a hard reset.

Another power supply, does that mean a new cable to power the Q10 or am I missing something else?

If the HDDs have their own power supply they will be OK. I meant that 3x unpowered USB HDDs would probably be overkill for the Q10 Pro. The solution if you are using unpowered HDDs is to insert a powered USB hub between Q10 Pro and the HDDs.

It's not obvious why your box is resetting. My advice would be to install FW 2.0.1 and update from there to latest firmware. 2.0.1 will re-partition and format the internal flash. So you'd need to install 2.0.1 > 2.0.3 > 2.0.4 > 2.0.7.

Did not know that - that's maybe always smart to do if you want to completely wipe your box.

Thanks! I will try that once I got some time on my hands.

It's may not just be a issue with the 'brick', but with internal regulation and supply. A 'dirty' PS can cause problems.

Thanks I have installed all 4 firmware in that order again. Just in case, I have only 2 of the 3 external drives connected now. We will see if it happens again.  :)

Hot connecting a powered USB drive to my Q10 while the box was on standby caused Android 7 to crash and go into the wobbly circle loading logo. Since neither USB nor Q10 power supplies are earthed I'm guessing there was a spike that was big enough to trigger it. I turned the box off and back on after which it did a factory reset. I was running 2.04 with Kodi 17.6. I did a reinstall just in case. Fortunately I had backups of my library.
The lesson is therefore only to connect or remove external devices when the box is turned off at the wall.
