Interesting behavior on USB 3.0 host port on Q10 Pro
« on: October 14, 2016, 09:01:00 AM »
Previous Configuration:
An Aukey USB 3.0 powered hub is connected on the USB 3.0 host port of Q10 Pro. Attached is my DAC, 2TB portable drive, and USB 3.0 connection from my Dell monitor. My mouse and keyboard on the two USB 2.0 ports. All working fine since May when unit is purchased.

Problem:
My DAC wouldn't play. The app sees the DAC but would not play. No lights on my powered hub to indicate connection. However my 2TB portable drive and USB of my Dell monitor functions properly.

Experimentation:
Tested my DAC from my Android phone via OTG and it works as intended.
Tried to move the mouse on the Aukey powered hub and it won't work.
Tried to move the keyboard to the hub and it won't work as well.
Removed the the powered hub from the USB 3.0 port of  my Q10 Pro and plug directly the DAC and later the keyboard and it won't work.
And my 2tb portable drive and USB 3.0 from my Dell montior all working fine.

Current configuration:
Using currently the USB 3.0 hub from my Dell monitor w/c is plugged  on the USB 3.0 port of my Q10 Pro.
Attached to it are my mouse, keyboard and the Aukey powered hub.

My DAC is connected directly to one of the USB 2.0 ports.

Thoughts on why????

USB-3 ports use very different drivers than USB-2 so differences in support and capabilities are not so strange. Always test/try both for what you need.
See also throughput tests for FTP which are very much higher for USB-3. This is not purely due to a higher clock speed but above all the more efficient way flows are handled. It is e.g. very common that a boot-loader program only works via USB-2 and not via USB-3 (don't use USB-3 for FW flashing).

If you plug an USB-2 hub into an USB-3 port one gets the worst from both worlds as you run in backward compatibility mode. It should even support original low speed USB (-1)devices and hubs but if that all is implemented on Android OS? So that is the first question "are you using USB-3 hubs?" It makes no sense to use an USB-3 port with an USB-2 hub unless there is no native USB-2 port available. Use USB-3 for things which need high throughputs. Using a 4-slot USB-3 HDD Docking myself with obviously a build-in USB-3 hub which is amazingly fast also with Q10 Pro.

Another difference is that USB-3 should provide 5V at 1A instead of 5V at 500 mA for USB-2. So many devices including BD-Writers can now be powered straight via  USB-3. If all USB ports on media players can factually deliver the power they formally should is a big question mark for me. I am very sure many specific products I tested won't. Also the PSU provided is often marginally sized and overloaded when max current is pulled on all (some) ports. We learned that Q10 Pro in fact entirely runs on 5V internally and uses a DC/DC converter inside, 12V seems to be only deployed directly for the Internal HDD.

Bro, using a a USB 3.0 powered hub not 2.0. And it was working with everything attached to it since May.

Problem right now is some peripherals wont work, some does.

Attaching it directly to the Q10 Pro's USB 3.0 host port have the same behavior.

And these peripherals are basic non power hungry items: Mouse. Keyboard.
But my 2TB portable drive and my Dell monitor's USB 3.0 hub works.

So question, what gives??

Still not very clear to me what the situation is? You setup since may worked: did that include using the DAC on USB-3? What exactly changed since then?

If the question can be brought back to: These devices work on USB-3 and those also on USB-3 via an USB-3 hub and these devices work only on USB-2 and those on USB-2 via a hub. Then we may get Himedia to test USB-3 backward compatibility for some USB-2 (or even older) products. Have an with Android OS working RF keyboard/trackball/mouse that in fact still uses the original USB standard.

Android OS support for USB never was the strongest point, so there may be some incompatibilities.

Beats me, everything was working fine before.

Right now have a work around.

Kind of cool too. When I turn on the monitor my keyboard and mouse lights up also!
