External subtitle download (Beta evaluation)
« on: August 12, 2016, 07:31:56 AM »
This is based on the Beta update of pcristi including amongst others "external subtitle download".
"update_HiMediaVideoPlayer_1.0.6_HMD_0810_Release_with_VFD.zip"

Also available via the Futeko simple APK install :
"HiMediaVideoPlayer 1.0.6_HMD_0810_Release.APK" but this won't include VFD and other updates on other parts of the 1.06 firmware.

It in fact got me going to bed a bit late as I spend more time on it than planned.  ???

- Use of the download feature is plain and simple to use. It also works very fast. That is really nice.
The first implementation just produced English subs for me, but it found those also for the old movies which I tried.
It is probably still in full development. I see it as a Beta in current state despite the Chinese FW 1.07 being released with it.
- The good news was that the downloaded subs worked right away.
- It is impossible to pick the right entry from the list as no detailed information is made available. The original title gives a lot more indications.
- Downloaded subs go to a matching subdirectory on the internal flash. That is probably a good approach. For the heavy/advanced user with zillions of movies this brings some maintenance tasks with it.  It is questionable how well this scales over time for these users without such maintenance (auto wrap folder above upperlimit?)
- Plan myself to move the permanently to be kept subtitles to the traditional place being in the  BD/DVD folder or the ISO/MKV/AVI folders with the standard naming convention. The main reasons:  keep it all together (backups/copies), better overview which one's are available and universal deployment by multiple players around the house regardless brand/type. Left overs of one time views and unusable downloads to be cleaned up at the same time. As access via Samba Server to this folder worked just fine, this all can neatly be done via a PC remotely.
- The bad news was that the current external subtitle files for specifically DVD were not found anymore. It now looks only for these in the new location aparently. Consider this a glitch which needs to be solved before releasing it. Copying my own external subs to the new location following the convention had them found again as a workaround.
- The real surprise was that language reporting for external subs worked partially (undocumented but yes a requested feature). Using the standard convention for a movie called "mymovie" with an external sub called "mymovie.ENG.srt results in  an external sub to be detected as "ENG Exnternal srt". In fact the field between the two dots seems to be simply copied on front of the label. which is both adequate and flexible. This worked partially only as it worked for my MKV's I tried but not for BD/DVD folders (did not try ISO yet).  Note the extra n is still there in external.

- Missing implementation of language code 2 or 3 letter is not something new, this general need fix for DVD internal subtitles (2 letter code) and all type of external subtitles 2 or 3 letter code.
Language Codes  ISO 639-1,  ISO 639-2 are listed here
- Download subtitle at this moment is implemented for English/Chinese language base on Android language set, will be nice to have more language in future, more source I don't think will get it, need implemented / maintain different API for search/download.
- ISO format need to remove .iso for search string to get subtitles. -- more BD/DVD ISO testing show general working.

Understandable but English is almost always present what people look for mostly are the more exotic languages.
 more source I don't think will get it, need implemented / maintain different API for search/download.
I do understand the potential API dilemma (no standard?) The answer is conflictive to the one given for a 5 min time shift requirement (you can use more additional local/regional sources for better couverage)

This is what I am using right now.

Did not try BD/DVD ISO yet but Folders don't work for sure.

My post is was in addition to your remarks, didn't want to be answer to your post.

PS: Personal opinions is more easy/less cost to solve/maintain multisource subtitles in server site, that implement more API in HiMediaVideoPlayer and build new FW when API for search/download are change for one provider, but without information for Himedia, is just guessing what they can do.

LE: BDMV/VIDEO_TS work for me with this format

- Movie Name (folder)
|
  -> BDMV/VIDEO_TS (folder)
  -> Movie Name.en.srt

Download subtitle is search for  Movie Name, witch is correct.

1) There are many PRO's and CON's against using a mandatory central server by Himedia in this case.  Personally I am not too fond of having an organization in the middle who decides what I am going to get or not (worse a Chinese one). The question is similar to KODI dealing with Add-On's where both methods are used in parallel.

2) No I can't get subtitles bundled with DVD ISO's and or DVD Folders to work anymore. All named and placed correctly and working before applying the update. Just tried a BD Folder and a BD ISO which both worked. Probably that is what you tested and presumed DVD to work also? As my additional subtitle needs are far bigger for DVD than for BD worked the reverse way.
