This guide will show you how to install CoreELEC on Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) WITHOUT using ADB (Android Debug Bridge). The process may also work for other Android Boxes, just be sure to download the correct version of CoreELEC.
This process will install CoreELEC to a USB flash drive. To get the Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) back to it's previous Google TV operation just remove the flash drive.

1. PREPARE XIAOMI TV BOX S (3RD GEN)
- Turn on Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen).
- If not done so already go through the Google TV setup process until you get to the main menu. It is necessary to be signed into a Google account in order complete the later stages.
- You should now be at the main menu and signed into a Google account.
- After the first CoreELEC boot the Xiaomi remote will not work. It can be enabled in CoreELEC Bluetooth settings (it needs to be paired), but on first boot you will either need a compatible CEC remote (it's likely your TV remote will work) or a USB mouse/keyboard.
2. DOWNLOAD AND PREPARE USB COREELEC BOOTABLE USB
- Download the latest CoreELEC build: https://relkai.coreelec.org/?dir=Amlogic-no/ce-22 → choose Amlogic-no Generic (note, this is the correct build for Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen), for other boxes you'll need to research which is the correct download.
- Using the downloaded CoreELEC image, create a bootable USB flash drive using Rufus (or similar. e.g. 'USB Image Writer' in Linux).
- CoreELEC will perform better with higher performance USB flash drives, so use the fastest you can.
- On the bootable USB flash drive you just created, open the 'device_trees' folder. Copy the file: 7d_s905x5m_xiaomi_3rd_gen.dtb into the root of the drive and rename it to: dtb.img (again, this is Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) specific, for other boxes copy the correct file)
3. REBOOT INTO COREELEC FOR FIRST INSTALL
There are two ways to do this. Either by connecting the Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) by USB-A to USB-A cable to a PC with Android Debug Bridge (ADB) software installed or by installing an app that mimics ADB without the PC.
We think installation without ADB is significantly easier, hence why we wrote this guide! Choose either 3a (non-ADB) or 3b (ADB) below.
3a. INSTALL COREELEC WITHOUT ADB
- Download 'Reboot_to_CoreELEC_5.0.apk' from here and copy to a USB flash drive: https://github.com/jamal2362/Reboot-to-CoreELEC/releases.
- Insert flash drive into Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen). You should get a pop up asking what to do with the drive. Select 'USB' and then select the 'Reboot_to_CoreELEC_5.0.apk' file to install the apk.
- You may get a pop-up saying that 'Media Player not allowed to install unknown apps'. Go to settings and enable installation of unknown apps for the Media Player app.
- Install Reboot to CoreELEC. It will now appear in the home screen 'Your apps' section.
- Enable Developer Mode on the Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen). Go to Quick Settings - All settings - System - About. Place cursor over 'Android TV OS build' and press remote OK button 7 times. A message will pop up at the bottom of the screen saying 'You are now a developer!'. You will have a new menu item in the System menu, 'Developer options'.
- In 'Developer options' make sure 'Enable developer options' and 'USB debugging' are enabled.
- Insert the CoreELEC bootable USB flash drive you prepared earlier into Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen).
- Run the 'Reboot to CoreELEC' app and select 'FIRST REBOOT'.
- You may get a pop-up asking 'Allow USB debugging?'. Select Allow.
- The Xiaomi will reboot into CoreELEC and install CoreELEC to the USB flash drive.
- From now on your Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) will boot into CoreELEC unless you remove the USB drive or select 'boot from eMMC' in the CoreELEC shutdown menu.
3b. INSTALL COREELEC USING ADB
- Enable Developer Mode on the Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen): (Quick Settings - All settings - System - About). Place cursor over 'Android TV OS build' and press OK 7 times. A message will pop up at the bottom of the screen saying 'You are now a developer!'. You will have a new menu item in the System menu, 'Developer options'.
- In 'Developer options' make sure 'Enable developer options' and 'USB debugging' are enabled.
- Insert the CoreELEC bootable USB flash drive you prepared earlier into the Xiaomi.
- Using a suitable USB-A to USB-A cable, connect via ADB and run: adb reboot update.
- Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) will boot into CoreELEC.
