Dolby Vision on Q10 Pro?
« on: April 19, 2016, 08:17:51 PM »
I'm a little confused about the Q10 Pro being advertised as Dolby Vision since the media player is 10 bit and Dolby Vision movies are  12 bit.

To me it's not a big deal since there are only a few 4K sets that have Dolby vision at this point (LG OLED, Vizio and TCL), but possible in the near future
there will be more.

Hope someone can answer this technical question about whether this is a true Dolby Vision player?

Unsure, but it seems HDR is winning the battle over DolbyVision, and latter may not last as a format for 4K.

Thanks hdmkv, maybe . could ask Himedia.

Someone from another forum mentioned that HDR may go 12 bit in the future but when I google to look for that information I can't find anything.

I know Samsung and Sony are staying away from Dolby vision for now at least. Which is strange because Sony Pictures are implementing it on some of
their movies.

Isn't technology great!

No kidding. I never heard of 12-bit until now. 10-bit is barely coming to life :).

For 4K yes 10-bit is max. For 1080P Deep Color may be 10-bit or 12-bit. I do have some BD's with 12-bit (36-bit total) deep color. It has been part of the old standard always, but very few Media Players support it (but my Eminent EM7345 does). All BD-Players do support it though, all recent TV's support it too. The HDMI capability exchange validates support of Deep color or 36-bit as it is called there.

HDR and Dolby Vision are competing technologies and both should be supported. Both are part of the "Ultra HD Premium" standard association and covered by its label. 4K at 12-bit is not part of it. Changing that would require a next generation.

Thanks Danba for the information, you put a lot of work in the explanation!

One thing about Dolby Vision that I don't personally like is that it's a set format, meaning that you cannot adjust any controls (ex. contrast, brightness, color, tint) like it's mentioned in the article. Whereas, with HDR those controls are adjustable.
