Unfortunately if you use the wrapper then Kodi will be not much more than a bloated file browser. At least none of the features I use Kodi for works. If you don't use the wrapper you will get mediocre sound and image quality.
Video picture quality is the same using Kodi internal player and HiMediaplayer (wrapper) with Imprex enhancement turned off. Imprex is not essential and many people prefer as little messing with the image as possible. Picture quality with Imprex off or via Kodi player is excellent.
For multi-channel sound you need to use wrapper.
Kodi can be set up (and Kodi 16.1 is pre-installed this way) to use wrapper for local files and Kodi player for streams. So streaming add-ons should work. For Kodi 17 see here: http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=710.msg13417#msg13417
Subtitles are a little messy with wrapper at the moment (on Android 17 sub timing adjustment causes stutter and sub gap timing is too strict losing some subs). These issues are being looked at by HiMedia and will be fixed.
