Read Nice Monkey's tutorial. Any correctly formatted hard drive should work.

q10 arrived this afternoon  :)
on the bright side its a very smooth and fast android box great picture quality and superb sound.
but as i feared when fitted internally the Toshiba  X300 4TB hard drive does not work/not compatible with q10 it does not see the drive at all .
i will have to make do with my old 1.5TB HD.
the 4TB hard drive works fine as an external HD .
hopefully this will be fixed with a firmware update ?

A bit of patience please. Mine is on its way. When I get it, will test the exact support of Q10 Pro.
The tutorial is based on experience with various other brands/products and general knowledge.

A drive of 4TB that works Externally normally does not work Internally without a Full Re-Format.
If you want my help always publish the output of the fsutil command, then we know where we are talking about. .

If partition table is GPT and format NTFS I am surprised it isn't working. It should.

One thing we got occasionally with the Q10 4K3D was the SATA connector not being pushed fully into the HDD SATA port. It might seem a simple thing, but we've had several instances of that being the problem.

Is the HDD receiving power, can you hear it spin? If you can't then it might suggest the above.

As a last resort you might have to reformat the drive. It should work using the Windows format tool, GPT partition table and NTFS format. Otherwise default settings.

Not if it is a new Native 4K HDD from WD. That one uses 4K Physical and 4K Logical sectors. Previous drives used 512e resulting in 4K Physical and 512 byte Logical Sectors. The platform using the drive is unaware of Physical sectors and only deals with Logical Sectors (PC or Media Player).

Do the fsutil show command please and you can see it straight away. Yes, again a new variable to look at. No you can't change either Sector format yourself that is done by the manufacturer. You only can change the Cluster size which is something different again (=file System size for Read/Write actions).

It's a Toshiba  X300. You're more knowledgeable than me but I can't understand why it won't work.

Please connect it via (E)SATA to a Windows PC and execute the "fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo x:" command. Then we can say something.
My own Q10 Pro is still floating around somewhere.

Can't find the details needed. It is a recent high-end model like WD Black and seems to be made by WD too (internal type number).
So the likelihood that it is a Native 4K HDD is fairly high.

My Q10 Pro arrived yesterday and did the HDD tests first.

Tried a large number of HDD (WD and Seagate from 2 TB to 6 TB) both Internal and External via USB. Detection is fast and reliable. No differences found with the existing tutorial as is. What I can't test is HDD support for Native 4K drives as I don't own any yet.

The USB External Docking test for > 2TB (= HDD as used Internal with GPT) failed. A HDD is NOT detected, but standard MBR up to 2 TB  will work this way without problems.

Q 10 PRO

Test the internal bay with:

Seagate Archive ST8000AS0002 - 8TB gpt EXT3 => o.k.
Seagate Archive ST8000AS0002 - 8TB gpt EXT4 => o.k.

Seagate hdd are very loud. Not suitable for mediaplayer, only archive.

Always formated with gparted.

If you provide the output of the command we probably all know what is happening. Is it so difficult to do that.
Never had a case which could not be solved or explained. If it is a new "Native 4Kn"drive not supported then we all want to know as more will follow.

Thanks for sharing with us!

EXT4 is the better choice. It would be nice if you could test GPT with NTFS also? A quick format will do.

Seagate drives in general have a higher throughput than Western Digital drives but they tend to vibrate a lot resulting in noise.
Prefer WD for that reason. Inside  my PC I am using a Seagate for speed.

It is a pity for ST8000AS0002 as the price/TB is nice.
