New to this: MiniMX Android VS MiniMX OpenELEC
« on: March 06, 2016, 05:41:00 PM »
Hello

I am very new to this andriod/OS scene... I know my Windows and iOS like the back of my hand...

Basically I was looking for something that can use KODI, I was directed to the website with the MiniMX OpenELEC and the MiniMX Andriod models to look at. So I just have a couple of questions that hopefully somebody will be able to shine some light on

1. Whats the difference between the MiniMX OpenELEC and the MiniMX Andriod? apart from the price, does one do something more/better than the other?

2. All I will be using is KODI, do both come with KODI v.16 already installed?

3. If so... if there is an update for KODI will it auto update? or do I need to manually do it

4. If they dont come with KODI can I install it? either by the app store or manually downloading the latest version from www.kodi.tv ? and then install it (NO PC/Computer needed?)

Thank you for your time
I hope somebody can help me out

1. Hardware is identical. We install OpenELEC (OpenELEC is Linux Kodi) on the OpenELEC version.

2. Both come with Kodi 16. The difference between the two is that the Android version boots into Android and you then run the Kodi Android app whilst the OpenELEC version boots direct into Kodi. With the Android version you can install any other Android apps, with the OpenELEC version it only runs Kodi. Kodi OpenELEC version is faster to boot and faster in operation, that's why a lot of people prefer it. Also, if you really only want Kodi and no other Android apps then booting direct to Kodi is smoother.

3. The Android version should auto-update Kodi version (at least give you notification of an update) and also auto-update box firmware. The OpenELEC version requires a manual update involving copying some files to a micro-SD card and booting the box with reset button pressed. See the firmware threads on this forum for more info on how it works.

4. With the Android version you can replace pre-installed Kodi with Kodi either from Google Play Store or the Kodi website. With the OpenELEC version you'll need a PC to download firmware image and copy it to micro-SD.

Hi, I was just browsing this forum & i noticed your comments about updating Openelec via micro sd card.

I am running Openelec on an Intel Nuc. In the settings, you can check for updates. Or, what I usually do is download the new updated file, copy to the update folder, then the device after a reboot, will see the update, & ask if you want to update.
Doesn't this do the same thing?
Openelec on Celeron NUC
Genitech Mygica 510b with Kodi
Himedia 600B (no kodi) :_(

MiniMX uses a community build of OpenELEC which does not support OTA updates.

The OTA feature you describe is only for the mainline OpenELEC builds (those products officially support by OpenELEC).
