Does any of Zidoo devices play Divx?
« on: March 01, 2023, 11:00:44 PM »
Hi!

I still have Z10, which can not play Divx files. It is possible that it can not play some other types too, I have never checked, I was too shocked and I still am. Zidoo Z10 was the first media player I owned that couldnt play everything in my library.
To be onest, the native player cant play. If VLC player or other 3rd party player is installed it can play anything, but controling it with the remote is a mess and media interace is rendered useless.

I someone could please explain 1. why that is so 2. do all Zidoo products do that 3. maybe kindly suggest an alternative

Thank you

divx is a proprietary format and DivX Inc demand a fee for the right to play divx files. The origins of divx are murky and interesting, it has passed through many hands over the years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DivX,_Inc.

It's a pity it became so popular because it has caused a problem for many people with large avi/divx collections. Many players cannot play divx.

There are solutions:

- When it was decided to attempt to exploit divx for profit a very similar free codec was created called Xvid which is compatible with divx. You can often simply change the file headers in a divx file to xvid and it will play on devices which have not got the DivX licence. https://www.moviecodec.com/changer/

- divx files will play on Zidoo and other players using any player app that has the divx licence. For example VLC, Kodi. Just install those apps to play the file.

- Because divx is a proprietary format with the murky history it's unpredictable what will happen to it in future. The best long term solution is to bulk convert all your avi/divx into something modern, compatible and free like MKV/H.264. Apps like Handbrake will do this for you quickly with no loss in quality. https://handbrake.fr/
