Failure to play iso files
« on: September 04, 2021, 05:05:53 PM »
Hi,

I just purchased a Real Vision 4K a couple of days ago and am trying to use it to play my DVD movie collection from ISO files.  All these files play fine on my laptop but fail to play on the Dune.  Most of them start but the video of the initial screen and menu is so terribly broken up that it's useless and not even possible to make a menu selection.
I was initially trying to play from ISO through a Samba share over Wifi but when that didn't work I have also tried a Video_TS folder.  And I have also tried the same files through a wired connection and also from a local Micro SD card.
I was also connecting through a video switching amp originally but have switched to a direct HDMI connection to the TV to get it the best chance, using the HDMI cable that came with it.
I have also tried configuring the device as 4k and as 1080p - no difference.  And I've also tried upscaling on the device and on the TV - no difference.
I am assuming this isn't expected behaviour since the tech spec says it plays DVD ISO and it seems that others are doing it successfully.
Is there anything obvious I could be doing wrong or is it likely to be a hardware fault with my specific device?

Product ID tv175u
FW version 210415_1106_r17

Thanks.

Nice Monkey

Very strange. It seems the DVD Menu causes the problem. DVD ISO's are always played with DVD Menu.

Tried several without problems myself. Also external subtitles worked with them.
How and with which program did you create those ISO's? Be aware settings are different for BD and DVD ISO's. Your PC may be ignoring mastering errors?

I'm using dd_rescue to create the ISO.  I also extracted an ISO on the laptop to a folder and playback is the same from there.
They all play perfectly on the laptop and completely unplayable on the Dune.  Its only vaguely possible to even make out the menu.  And if you can select play it doesn't play the main feature.
How can I tell if the ISO has mastering errors?  If so, why would the Dune completely fail to render the movie when other devices can display them fine?  Is that expected behaviour?

Is there somewhere that I can download a test/reference ISO to try?

Actually created a simple test ISO with menus and it seems to play OK.  So is there a way to confirm if an ISO has authoring errors and is there a way to have the Dune ignore it as the laptop does?

Another piece of information - if I download vlc for Android on the Dune, it can play my ISO file.  The video quality is fine but the playback is extremely choppy.  So that seems to confirm there's nothing wrong with my video files.
So it the Dune just not capable of playing full DVD movies from ISO?
Presumably I'm not the only person trying to do this?

The Dune is capable of playing DVD ISO rips. I think the problem is with your rips somehow.

We've been in discussion via email. I have asked for a sample of a ISO that won't play. Please send / upload this via email so it can be tested on another Real Vision.

Hello,
I have noticed another problem from my side: The Vision 4k Pro Solo is unable to play BDMV file as BD-light or directly from .ts file. Playback from full BD menu is no problem, although it gets stuck for a moment from time to time.
BD-light & direct playback is very choppy (picture & sound), thus unable to watch. I have tried different tracks from Dolby Atmos 7.1 to AAC 2.0, with or without subtitles & no difference - it cannot be played properly.
Has anybody experienced this problem?
Remark:
I was just also wondering, why is that happening? Shouldn't it to be no problem playing in all options the BDMV folder? The same content is played - the .ts files. The Dune player should have no problem to play the same .ts file using BD-light & direct .ts method, like it is playable from the full BD Menu? It's just the same .ts files played in each case... It is strange to me.

If I have a problem with a movie what is the best way to upload it so you can test it! A 1:1 backup is between 50 Go to 90 Go. Is that what you suggest?

My general advice for bugs and feature request is to contact Dune direct on support@dune-hd.com. They are responsive to email.

We are a reseller, we have no direct input into firmware development.

We are investigating the problem described in the opening post though because Dune does play DVD ISO. Exactly why it isn't in this case is the question.

We have tested an ISO supplied by parmsd and it doesn't play properly on any media player we've tried (Realtek 1619DR, Realtek 1619, HiSilicon, Realtek 1296 based) so my conclusion is that there is a problem with how the ISOs are being created.

We've had zero other reports of the same problem playing ISOs on Dune or other RTD1619 based products, which would also support this conclusion.

This forum is not a place for discussion of how ripping a copy protected disc might have gone wrong. Whilst backing up DVDs is legal in many countries, it is illegal in others (including the UK) so we have a strict policy of no discussion about it on this forum. For this reason, I have deleted a couple of posts.
