Deep Color / x.v.Color / xvYCC
« on: January 04, 2016, 08:48:11 PM »
Can Q5/Q10 box reproduce 'Deep Color' aka 'x.v.Color' aka 'xvYCC' material?

I have several BD titles (Ghoustbusters I/II, Total Recall...) and some home videos which are in xvYCC quality and they really look stunning on my Panasonic GT60 plasma TV when they are rendered by BluRay player or by the telly itself (through direct play over DLNA or from SD/USB media).

Looking at the specs, Mede8er and other media streamers based on Realtek 1186 chipset should support xvYCC reproduction, as well as Dune HD Base 3D and other players based on Sigma Designs SMP8672. It seems that most of the "previous generation" chipsets were supporting xvYCC but now days this feature is scarse. I can see that x.v.Color / xvYCC is standard that never got on but I'm still not ready to give it up.

Realtek 1185/1186 is output 12bits x.v.Color.
Android mediaplayer including HiMedia Q5/Q10 at this moment is YCbCr 4:4:4 8bits.
HiMedia Q5/Q10 have ExpressX engine to improve image quality in hardware decoding players like Android Video player, HiMedia Video player, MX Player. Not work on XBMC/KODI.

Just to clarify, ExpressX does work when playing via wrapper from Kodi.

For new user out of box ExpressX Engine is on

Set ExpressX Engine Split Screen to see difference
Go to Settings /  Playback /Image Quality / ExpressX Engine / Split Screen
Android video player

HiMedia video player (Kodi with wrapper)

MX player

Don't look to closer to this picture is capture via HiControl, so look on your TV/Projector and set ExpressX Engine for your taste.

Great, but still, absence of xvYCC color space is kind of disappointing. No amount of processing can substitute expanded gamut.
