Wrapper issues with DVDs
« on: December 29, 2015, 01:10:52 PM »
Just taken the chance to play with my new Q5 purchased from the guys here but I'm having issues with playback via the wrapper (probably a noob issue).

Must say what I have seen so far the picture / sound quality far exceed my old HTPC of few years  :)

I like to store my files as close to the originals as possible. My DVDs are in VideoTS folders and BluRays as iso's. These are presented in a single SMB share.

Kodi plays the BluRays fine under the wrapper but it throws a popup when playing DVDs saying "video problem CONFIRM". I can play the DVDs using the internal Kodi player. Also I can play all the files outside of Kodi via the Media Center (I assume this is the exact same player as the wrapper points to?)

I have removed Kodi, the wrapper, cleared caches etc. and reinstalled and still have the same issue... Any ideas or suggestions?

Gary,

I had the same issue. The Wrapper doesn't seem to like the original disc structure for either DVDs or BluRays. I had probs with both!

Convert to .ISO (or other single file format) and it seems to be fine. I've done all my BluRays but have so many DVDs to convert that I've only done about half so far.

Hope that helps.

Steve.

Griff,
Thanks for the reply and likewise I have a lot of DVDs that I'd have to convert to ISO. The formats I choose were based on the best at the time and going forward I wanted to keep the best quality/compatibility and not alter the original so I have the best archive rather than the most space efficient.

What I don't understand is that the files will play outside of Kodi so it must be more to do with the way that Kodi passes the link on to the media player?

OK made a little more progress with this...

Adding the following line to the playercorefactory.xml file...

                  <rule dvdfile="true" player="DVDPlayer"/>

and restarting Kodi now allows it to use the internal player which works but if I change it to

                  <rule dvdfile="true" player="XMBCWrapper"/>

I get the "video problem" popup in the himedia player

Need to read up some more... http://kodi.wiki/view/External_players

Just seen the new firmware so I thought I'd give it a go. It seems that it is a complete wipe of the machine so that in turn should mean that if I had tweaked something I shouldn't have that it would have been reset.

Sorry to say exactly the same problem, BluRay's (.iso) just fine under the wrapper but DVD (Video_TS folder structure) result in the video problem

Tried various things today but cant get to the bottom of it. I can only assume that the file and/or path that is sent from from Kodi to the HiMedia Player is wrong. Any idea how we get visibility of this handover?

We will look into this and potentially discuss it with Himedia tomorrow morning.

Futeko, Thanks for that. I'll be offline till the 4th so cannot do any more testing just yet. Not sure why but in Kodi various movies miss a beat under the internal player whereas the HiMedia player seems very well behaved and of great quality.

My last tests for the day seem to point to DVD menus in that under Kodi selecting a DVD will run its menu where as selecting the same folder under the external media player will just run the movie.

It's something to do with Himedia player launching into DVD playing mode when the DVD folder is selected whilst the Kodi player doesn't do this.

Kodi is missing the trigger into DVD mode so just opens the folder.

I've informed Himedia about the problem.

In the meantime, DVDs can be played in Kodi by finding the VIDEO_TS.IFO file inside VIDEO_TS, pressing menu button on remote then 'play using..' 'DVDPlayer'. Or by using Himedia Media Center app.

Futeko, did you ever get any more info on this from Himedia?

Although there are workarounds none are very slick or user friendly (WAF) which is a shame because all I want is a reliable good quality media collection playback device. Currently I only have part of this.

I have tried a few more things since and it is nothing to do with the media sources or share points. It is, as you say, the handover between Kodi and the media player. Do you know of any tweaks to playercorefactory.xml that may assist the handover to the mediaplayer so it does not get confused?
