Q10 Pro SPDIF out: is DD/DTS to 2.0 PCM downmix working?
« on: December 30, 2018, 08:03:42 AM »
Hello!

Maybe I will buy something like the FiiO D03K external SPDIF->stereo RCA analogue DAC converter to gain some higher sound quality out of the box for my active stereo speakers.

As this DAC has no DD and DTS decoder implemented and can only accept 2.0 PCM signal, I would ask about, if in the case of videos with 5.1 DD or DTS audio track, will there be any sound processed through the SPDIF (optical or coax) outputs?

There's the LPCM setting for the SPDIF out in the Settings menu, but if I set "HBR" option to "Auto", will it convert the 5.1 DD and DTS audio to 2.0 PCM acceptable for the external DAC?

And will this conversion also work in the case of DD Plus (E-AC3) and DD Plus Atmos tracks?

Anyone tested it yet the way I've described?

Thanks!

Every single movie that I "rent" from the torrent sites with diverse audio codecs like AC3 and dts is properly down mixed to stereo via digital output optical and coaxial.

For  FiiO D03K need 192/24 bit putput, android box only output at 48/16 bit, you not have good advance or better sound quality.

buy a new good DC like "CCTV Camera DC 12V" 3A or maybe 5A  for Q10 and use RCA stereo output.

For music, I guess the SPDIF out would be enough for me, as most of my FLAC files are encoded in 44.1kHz / 16bit anyway. And I guess that even this FiiO has a far better DAC than the one inside the Q10 Pro. Or would be this an exaggeration?

And what about the FiiO D07, that also has internal DD/DTS decoders? So I could skip the Box's own PCM conversion and send the DD and DTS audio straight bitstreamed into the D07. How's that would turn out quality wise?

Other options advised to me are: Connect DA51 (PCM, DD and DTS), Connect DA21 (PCM only, but has a "Wolfson DAC").

Another way would be to skip the SPDIF and do the same concept on the HDMI output: SMSL SH-1 (Can do DD and 2.0 PCM, but not sure about 5.1 PCM and DTS decoding, but surely has a good quality DAC), Connect AE14 (DD, DTS and 2.0 PCM).

-> So formats like DD or DTS also can be decoded by the external DAC's.

My presumption is that the 48kHz/16bit PCM regulation only applies to the SPDIF outs and on the HDMI it could be bitstreamed untouched? And even when it's converted from DD or DTS to 2.0 PCM previously by the Box? Am I right on this one?
