Aspect ratio 1,33 problem with DVD
« on: August 27, 2018, 08:36:42 PM »
Just got Zidoo X20pro. Not sure yet if my settings are right, but I noticed  same kind of aspect ratio problem as in HiMedia Q10pro. I bought Zidoo, just because I have a large collection of films, made in forties and fifties... and because  HM Q10 can't handle neither DVD menus or SD resolution.

In original aspect ratio 1,33 and SD resolution (source DVD) - if I select from Zidoo aspect ratio FULL, picture is 1,85 (16/9), and with setting FIT it's near 1,60 or weird 1:1. Only way to get the correct ratio 1,33 is to use setting FULL and set the screen "anamorphic" from my video projector.  But this setting won't help when picture in the dvd is letterboxed.

Every DVD or BR-player can handle this without several settings. I hope that settings in my Zidoo are wrong...   there are still a lot of movie classics out there which are avaiIable only in DVD.

But anyway, I confirm that full DVD menus are working fine in Zidoo.

Ps. where's full PDF-manual, can't find it from Zidoo, Home

Can you point to a sample? PAL DVD 720x576 and NTSC DVD 720x480 display as expected on X20 (either as original ratio in FIT mode or stretched to fill screen in FULL mode).

A workaround solution may be to use ZDMC: https://www.zidoo.tv/Support/release_apk.html

Here are the samples. These are from commercial NTSC and PAL DVD's. Seems to me that NTSC in fit mode is too wide and PAL is too narrow.
Picture 2 is NTSC in fit mode and 3 NTSC full mode corrected with projector - now correct ratio.

...more in next post because your size limits. I will send all these also to your mail with better resolution, if necessary.

Picture 4 is PAL in fit mode and number 5 PAL full mode corrected with projector - correct ratio.
Both were corrected with same anamorphic setting.

File resolution, the resolution of the rip?

I ask because standard PAL rips are 720x576 and display normally for me here with a TV. Standard NTSC rips are 720x480 and also display normally. I want to know whether there is something unusual about your rips.

As i wrote, they are 1:1 commercial DVD rips. NTSC 720x480 and PAL 720x576. I tested several VIDEO_TS folders. Current resolution is possible to see also from Zidoo's info.  All are playing correct with my stone-age old TVIX media-player. Source is not the problem.

I thought, that it is possible to get some product support from here...    Did you ask about this aspect ratio problem from Zidoo ? Do have any ideas what to do ?

I checked all my settings and tried different options + several dvd rips. The end result is always the same. 1.33 aspect ratio is wrong in both NTSC and PAL format.  NTSC is too wide and PAL too narrow. Same dvd-rips are playing correct with my stone-age old TVIX media-player.

I hope Zidoo can correct this in next firmware, because in many ways this is really good product. :)

I didn't fully understand the problem.

720x576 PAL is 1.25 ratio. 720x480 NTSC is 1.5 ratio.

When a PAL DVD rip is played on X20 and the image produced is measured with a tape measure, it is a seemingly correct 1.25 ratio.

After some research, the problem is that PAL/NTSC used non-square 'pixels', so digital devices with square pixel size need to stretch the image slightly to produce correct aspect. This is what Zidoo (and many others) are not currently doing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_aspect_ratio
https://lurkertech.com/lg/pixelaspect/
https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/380066-Aspect-Ratio-help-What-ratio-is-this#post2456677

It needs a setting added to Zidoo player to stretch the image appropriately to the correct ratio (768x576 for PAL).

In the meantime there are a couple of ways around it.

1. Many TVs/projectors have an anamorphic setting (as yours does).
2. If you install ZDMC, it's internal player (Find movie, press menu button, select 'Play using' - Videoplayer) plays PAL/NTSC with the correct aspect ratio.

I will forward this thread to Zidoo and ask them to look into it. X20/X20 Pro should recognise when PAL/NTSC content is being played and stretch the image accordingly. This is what I'll be pushing Zidoo to implement.

Thanks  :), now you got it right what I meant.
I hope they can fix this problem. Because 1,25 or 1,5 ratio's doesn't exist. On both Universal logo or full moon are oval.
Basically it's from analog to digital problem. NTSC and PAL were build from tv-lines. PAL had more lines inside precisely same picture size as NTSC.

ps.
TVIX-HD M-6600N is the only media player i have seen, which could play both correct. It was made in 2010. It had one feature they should copy to Zidoo. Tvix made from every HD resolution video file a small gif-clip thumbnail or you could say trailer.  No need for movie wall, and the picture was always
100% correct.

I think we will fix it in the next firmware.
