23.976 not supported in latest firmware (affects 3D ISO's only)
« on: October 07, 2015, 07:44:24 PM »
Update on this issue: 23.976 being displayed at 24.000 affects only 3D ISO's. All 23.976 2D is playing at proper 23.976. All via wrapper (external, HiMediaPlayer). Details here.

While testing Zidoo X6 today, and comparing to Q5 (latest v3.0.1.1 firmware), I noticed that Q5 is outputting 23.976 at 24.000. This was supposedly fixed a couple firmwares back, but 23.976 is gone again? With my new Epson 5025UB, 23.976 gets correctly reported as 23.97.

And 'Avatar' 3D (in screenhot below) is indeed 23.976, not 24.000 (verified via MediaInfo on my PC).

With 1080p/23.976 BD rip to MKV, my Epson also reports 24.00.

Which was the last best firmware? I don't have previous firmwares saved unfortunately; maybe Futeko can share download links to these?

Okay, this is very interesting... with firmware v1.0.9.1, HiMedia Q5 plays:

- 23.976 3D ISO's at 24.00Hz
- 23.976 2D ISO's and MKV's at proper 23.97Hz (but, only for VC-1; H.264 plays at 24.000)

Here are the tests you suggested I do. Love that my new Epson 5025 shows detailed video info. on what it's receiving...

Firmwares v1.0.9.1 and v3.0.1.1 yield exactly the same results:
  • 29.97 displays at 60.00
  • 59.94 displays at 60.00
  • 59.97 displays at 60.00
  • VC-1 23.976 displays at proper 23.97 (Tested '3:10 to Yuma'; LPCM 7.1 passes properly to AVR, unlike Zidoo passing 2.0)
  • H.264 23.976 (majority of BD rips) displays at 24.00 (not ideal, but I've never noticed microstutters or frame drops every 40-some seconds with Q5)
  • VC-1 29.97 displays at 60.00; stutters, with frame drops & has deinterlacing artifacts (jaggies)
  • MPEG2 1080i displays at 60.00; plays excellent
  • MPEG2 720p displays at 60.00; plays excellent
The issue is H.264 23.976 playing at 24.00. Odd, as VC-1 23.976 plays properly at 23.97. I don't have MPEG2 23.976 to try.

I REALLY like how HiMedia Q5 can change TAB to 3D so when I watch a 3D movie my subtitles are awesome!!!
However I would REALLY like to use Kodi Zoom function (I Love the idea of zooming in especially since Kodi allows me to Zoom only on the Y scale)

As you know, I cannot play Dolby Atmos with Kodi, I need to use HiMedia Media Player for that.

Now, I read that Zidoo X6 has a modified version of Kodi 15 which allows Dolby TrueHD / Atmos from Koodi without using an external player.

1) Is this true can I play Atmos directly from the Kodi app?
2) I read somewhere that they stripped the zoom functionality of that modified version of Kodi.
Is that true?

3) Did you try Dolby Atmos?

4) Which one do you like the lost HiMedia Q5 or Zidoo X6?

Hi, i don't know why himedia don't fix directly in firmware the 24p problem instead using the wrapper, i like a lot kodi, and media center hangs when browsing a big nas (9TB) full of files, says network error, retry or cancel, but is not a network error, i can use perfectly from my computer with no hangs at all, will be great, is for me the most important bug: 24p in kodi without wrapper, rest of the q10 for is ok.
Thanks

1/3. I don't *think* (no ATMOS amp here) the H8 supports True-HD ATMOS.

2.No zoom in H8 custom Kodi.

4. Different products. The Zidoo X6 is the same internal hardware as H8 but with tiny cheap plastic casing so is prone to overheating. Also Himedia will deliver better firmware. Q5 is better for format support, picture quality and AV outputs.

1/3. Well I think if it allows Dolby True HD passthrough then it should work.

2. Why was the zoom functionality stripped?
On HiMedia Q5 I can watch a video, pause it, and then under video options I can zoom. I don't understand why would that feature be removed.

4. This is a contradiction. I bought the Zidoo X6 Pro (arriving Monday), and even though I am aware it has a cheap plastic casing, the firmware seems to be better.

I am requesting if you can please add the Kodi they have into your HiMedia Q5 box (as it has the same internal hardware and the software was released open source on GitHub.

I really lost the functionality of zoom in/out.
Even my 5+ year old Western Digital TV Live Hub had a simple option that will zoom any movie.

The whole reason I bought a new box is because I miss that zoom functionality.

Please

1. Not necessarily. ATMOS is an addition to True-HD, there are many products that support True-HD but not ATMOS. As far as I am aware neither H8 or Zidoo X6 support ATMOS. Only Himedia Q5/Q10/M3.

2. No idea. It's been replaced by 3D options so I guess during 3D development they were looking for somewhere to put the 3D menu. Zoom is a fairly minor feature for for most people.

4. Zidoo firmware is pretty good, true. However, after 1.0.7 release H8 firmware and Zidoo firmwares are quite similar. It is much harder to fix a fundamental hardware problem (casing too small causing overheating) then it is to fix a firmware problem like no zoom. Himedia have the hardware fundamentally right with H8 and the firmware will continue to be developed.
