Dolby Digital AAC sound
« on: March 08, 2018, 04:20:51 PM »
Hello, I have updated to the lastest 2.0.7 firmware, but Audio Passthrough was not working with Kodi.
So now I have installed the latest Custum firmware and audio Passthrough now works except AAC 5.1 sound, which he simply passes on as 2.0 sound.
Someone an idea where that can be or to which setting I should look?

Installed SPMC, but it is the same, no AAC 5.1 sound!?
Is it a setting in Android or what am I doing wrong?

Use the "wrapper" instead of Kodi as player.  The in-built Media Center player has no problems with AAC 5.1 (which is not from Dolby but is an Apple codec).

Wrapper does not work with Kodi streams!?

For streaming try setting your audio channels to 5.1 rather than 2.0.

No i am afraid there is no solution, just find another stream with AC3 although the number of streams available with anything else that AAC is becoming less and less.
I am quite happy with my Q5 pro and the build in player is great, if it could somehow be used for streams as well as local material it would be nice, not sure if anybody has any pointers about this but i think it can't be done.
Alternative solution is to get an AMlogic s912 machine and dual boot libreelec on it , you get full support for everything this way. I was just testing a Vorke Z1 i have in the bedroom with libreelec and i am very close to replacing my Q5pro with the Vorke in the main TV room.
To bad the Q5pro is about double the price of Vorke Z1 , disappointing stuff really, you would expect a premium box to perform a lot better.

Have you tried the latest KODI "shitty" builds?  It fixes the DD and DTS issues, maybe it will also work with AAC.

You will notice the difference in image quality (colour/saturation/sharpness) with Amlogic S912 vs HiMedia.

Actually the S912 and S905X Boxes with LibreElec or OSMC have pretty good PQ.

I'm not saying it's terrible, I'm just saying it's inferior.

Rather far from terrible, yea. As they have a quite "neutral" PQ, but without any mean deficiency (like the Oppos or Zidoos have in the "Spears&Munsil tests").  I guess Amlogic only falls back with the SD video upscalling, that could have been better. In this case the HiMedia surely does a bit better job, but I guess it's also a bit ahead with HD/4K content. But sometimes the judging of these PQ differences may also depend on personal taste. Some might also prefer Zidoo if they just like the way it's picture looks during real playback. These "synthetic tests" are very objective, but that doesn't make the choice mandatory.
