HDMI deep colour settings - can't change
« on: January 16, 2018, 11:21:21 AM »
Hi,

When playing with settings I was not able to change it to anything else than default YCbCr 4:2:2 8 bit , was anyone able to do that and change to RGB444 10 bit for example?
MY TV - SONY 65XE659305

Thanks.

Try to change the HDMI port on the TV.
My Sony accepts 10 bit on ports 2 and 3 only.

Thanks, but it is already connected via HDMI 3. Could it be HDMI cable then? If 1.4 standard...?

Why don't you use the cable provided by HiMedia?

You have to set it on the TV too (HDMI deep colour setting).
All HDMI cables are all the same, it's the ports that're different.

I said, I have enabled it on TV, that was the first thing that I have done (extended HDMI capabilities on HDMI port that Himedia is connected to).

And it is still the same. I am not able to chenge to any different settings on Himedia then YCBCr 442 8 bit... What a crap.

More info:

When I change to 1080P resolution - I am able to switch to RGB444 10 bit colour mode

Any resolution on 2160P 30or 60Hz - only YCBR 420 available...

What the fuck?

Not all HDMi cables are the same, but if you own one that's certified as "High-Speed" cable, that it probably should do. (No need to some more expensive cables, but at least don't buy the cheapest Chinese ones from E-bay etc...) If you want to go for 100% sure, than buy the ones with "Premium High Speed HDMI Cable" label.

And on 4K/60Hz/10bit the only setting that works is 4:2:0. That's an HDMI 2.0 limitation. It doesn't really matter, since when the 23.976Hz switching happens (when starting a video), it will automatically switch to either 422 or 444.

HI Mount81,

Thank you for the prompt answer. Now is the question - if changing the cable would help to be able to switch to 444 10 bit , so far no luck? Why I am able to change it for lower resolution on Himedia and why not for 2160P?

Please read more carefully my previous answer. On 4K/60Hz/10bit you CAN'T choose other than 4:2:0, as it's a HDMI 2.0 technical standard limitation.

OK so does it mean that we are doomed for 420 profile at 2160p resolution?

Technically Yes and No. As I said 2x before: only on 4K/60HZ (and 50Hz)/10bit.  At the very second you start playing a video that is (as usually) 23.976/25/30fps is switches the framerate to lover Hz accordingly to the fps and so does switch the color resolution with it to 444 or 422. But why would you need the other ycbcr settings on 60Hz? It only would make sense in the case of 60fps 4K videos, which are insignificantly rare. What do you expect to loose in this case?

Thanks,

The strange thing - after disconnecting TV from the power for 15 mins, and hard reset on Himedia - I am no able to set YCBR 444 10bit on 2160P 60Hz using the same cable... Odd...
