Smart YouTube TV
« on: January 02, 2018, 05:36:01 PM »
I recently discovered Smart YouTube TV (https://smartyoutubetv.github.io/en/). For Amazon FireTV this is the best alternative YouTube app (because Google pulled the original YouTube app from FireTV)  so I tried it on the Q10 Pro - and I really like it, works great. Also has 4K support - but I don't have a 4K television, so can't test this.

I will give it a try. Sounds pretty interesting. I wonder how it manages to work without Google Services. It may just be a wrapper over the web version of Youtube. It would not be a bad thing, we need to test it.

I tested the current APK 6.12.30, 6.12.33 , 6.12.34 on Himedia Q5 Pro Firmware 2.04

You do not need a 4K TV for this because the App opens a Menu from within you can choose of several App Variants including non 4K Versions.
Also you can set a App Variant as default so it will load up from scratch then without the pre Menu.
You can still acess this Menue alltime again and switch a Variant pressing "return" while the YT App then loads.

Except of the "4K MiTV" Variant Video playback stutters and often stops or freezes compared to the current standalone  YT Android TV APK .

Using the 4KMITV Variant  you have to set your Resolution Output one time manually to 720p or 1080p inside the YT App "Options" > Video
if you do not have a 4K TV or do not want to stream 4K even if you have 1080p.

If you set it to 720p then all Video will be played in 720p while the framerate 50 / 60 / 24 Hz will vary depending on the Source. So it wont set a fixed framerate which could cause issues in smooth playback then. Once you load up another Video you may see it stays at 720p or 1080p Res but Framerate will be different then dending on the Source which is good.

SmartYT TV also installed a additional Android Software Package which it needs to work.

It would be allover great then with the 4K MiTV Variant but Smart YouTube TV has a huge Shutdown bug or Himedia incompatibility behavior in any Version ..

Once you close the YT App it reloads the App again instead of shutting down. This is with all the Variants and all Versions of Smart YT TV on the Q5 Pro  with Firmware 2.04. It appears either right the first time you shutdown , or laters after 2nd or 3rd App opening and closing process.

What i dislike also from the Video Loading behavior is that the Video loader icon is missing for no reason in any Smart YoutubeTV APK Version i tested which looks really bad since it has a huge pixelated placeholder instead of the loader icon ;) Not the world but i wonder why thsi is missing in any Pre Version also.

Current best stable but also not flawless so far new "official" YT App APK is in my opinion

https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/youtube-for-android-tv-android-tv/youtube-for-android-tv-android-tv-2-02-08-release/

which is also great, plays supersmooth with no Frame skipping or freezes but it has the super annoying Microphone Search included which is alltime default set once you open the YT search .

So you alltime get a microphone missing error or Info before you can search by Keyboard.
This can not be deactivated currently befor Google offers a App without the Microphone Search.
People complain about that since a longer time.

Plus also very unnice is this also has no possibility to sign in without a Google Mail Account.
No multi Account setups possible.
So belonging to family friendly Setups , not good.

But from playback behaviors and modern new Dark Grey WebSkin it is the best Version to date on Himedia 5 Pro i know of.

If the Shutdown Probs do not appear in Firmware 2.06 then of course SmartYT TV with  "4K MiTV" Variant would be the current best YT App on Himedia Q5 Pro having smooth playback , auto Framerate, Manual Resolution Menu, Multi Acounting ( Family friendly ).
If only the ugly missing loader Icon placeholder wouldnt appear in every Video you are loading.

No Freezes here at all in  2.02.08 with official  YouTube TV with Himedia Q5 Pro and official Firmare 2.04
I have also set my Player to 1080p 50 HZ.
I loaded like 20 4K Videos now of YT 4K Video Search
( Shows 4K Icon in Thumbnail Pic ).
All smooth ..

Did you install arm or arm64 ?

I am using "arm" which should be the correct Version.

https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/youtube-for-android-tv-android-tv/youtube-for-android-tv-android-tv-2-02-08-release/youtube-for-android-tv-android-tv-2-02-08-2-android-apk-download/

I won't install Himedia Firmware 2.05 or 2.06 because Aspect Ratio Auto Detection of 16:9 720x576 DVD /Mp4 / MKV is entire broken in 2.05 and 2.06.

How is Smart YouTube TV behaving in 2.06 ?

- Shutdowns
- Missing Loader

?

If anyone can test that thx a lot :)

Hi.

I also have issues with version 2.02.08 (and earlier versions) of Android for YouTube TV, image freezes in the videos that are available in 4K. My resolution is also set to 1080p 60Hz and my Firmware is current 2.06, also with 2.04 the same.

Using the 4KMITV Variant makes the Videos  run smoothly, great.
However, I'm worry about logging in with my Google data on an unofficial app, what do you think?

Cheers!

I just set my player to 1080p 60 HZ and it is still playing the 4K tagged Videos without any freezes in official YT Android TV  2.02.08 > ARM Version

Did you complete uninstall the previous YT Android before installing the new one YT Android TV  2.02.08 ?

I am on

Q5 Pro ( European )
Official Firmware 2.04

What i notice is if the Output is set to 1080p 60 HZ YT Playback is always very stutterish.
If set to 1080p 50 Hz it is supersmooth with any YT Media.

- What Player are you using Q5Pro or Q10 Pro
- Official , or Custom Firmware ?
- When do the 4K freezes appear ? Right after starting , after some minutes , or only sometimes and not always ?

And belonging to Smart YouTube TV

Can you reply on the Questions

- App Shutdowns do not work accurate and App always restarts
- Missing Loader Icon when starting a Video ( Placeholder appears )

I have no idea how secure this is to add your private account YT data.
Seems to be a Russian Software Development

It also installed "another" Android Software on the Q5 Pro after the app was installed which it told is needed to let the app work.

Thx

Hello Again.

I have the Q10 Pro with the official firmware 2.06.
System: 1080P60hz
02/02/08 arm YT-Version.
Usually the picture freezes after about 20 to 60 seconds after starting, I have also tested older versions of YT, exactly the same.
Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRqiFPw2fY
However, I didn't uninstall the original YT version of Q10, just installed the new one over it.

For Smart YouTube TV, I can confirm the following:

- App Shutdowns do not work accurate and App sometimes restarts
- Missing Loader Icon when starting a Video (placeholder appears)

The issues with the latest YouTube TV version happened with official and CFW (Q10Pro), installing over the older version and uninstalling it first. The arm 64 version doesn't install at all so I've always installed the arm version.
The output is set to 1080p @60hz, the image freezes in the first seconds and the audio continues to play, if I jump forward in the time-line the video returns to normal playback and usually plays fine till the end.
Currently I gave up on version 2, the "factory" version is faster to load and navigate, it's missing some features but I can live with that.

Hi thx for all your replies and testings.

Good to read the Smart YouTube TV Issues with closing the App and missing Loader Icons are Q5 / Q10 system / Firmware wide.

I am sry but i still cannot reproduce the Freezes with 4K Media with youtube-for-android-tv-android-tv-2-02-08

- Himedia Q5 Pro ( EU Model )
- Official FW2.04
- Clean installed youtube-for-android-tv-android-tv-2-02-08-release

I again tested tons 4K Videos in the last h.
So this could be a Q10 Pro only Issue.

Also noticed that Smart YouTube TV is without advertisements! That's Nice :) So no annoying adds before playing video.
Didn't experience the 'closing app - reloads app' bug btw.

SmartYouTube TV received a lot of updates the last couple of weeks (a lot of updates on the 4K front). Maybe the problems people had with this app is now solved. I use it now daily and I never had any problems with it (I only have a 1080p television).
