Connecting Q10 to windows10 laptop via usb
« on: December 15, 2017, 11:00:38 AM »
Hi guys, need some help.
I got the q10 and it works great with the hdd installed. However, if I want to transfer files from my PC to the box with  a USB cable I am having problems. The laptop makes the sound that something is connected via USB but it's very slow and I can't actually access it. There is a G: drive visible but it doesn't let me go any further. I can't see what available space is on it. I've tried connecting it first with the q10 power off and still nothing.
Please help

Are you using a USB printer/external drive cable plugged in the back port of the Q10?

Simply plug in both ends of the cable, switch on the Q10 and then your laptop should find the internal drive.
You can move, copy and rename files, change directories, same as any external USB drive.
It does make transfers fast  ;D

Yeah, it's a standard USB cable that's connected to the back of the q10. It just doesn't seem to want to read the drive. Takes ages for the laptop to detect the G: drive but it won't let me access it. Something to do with I/O error if that makes any sense

I've had a similar issue with one particular hard drive, it would only work when I connect the Q10 to a USB 2.0 port of my laptop, any other of the remain 3.0 ports wouldn't work. With another hard drive it would work in any USB port.

While a standard old USB 2.0 cable will fit, you may also get a better experience using a proper USB 3.0 cable (assuming your laptop has a USB 3.0 port?).
It has a much higher data throughput as the rear port is USB 3.0.

Is your hard drive Partitioned GPT and formatted NTFS?  Always good to start from scratch by deleting the existing partition as well as reformatting.  I had an issue (noted in another thread here) where a Seagate 4Tb unpowered external HDD was not recognised by the Q10Pro until the partition was fully deleted and reinstalled.
