Subtitle display bug: frequently changing "interline spacing".

Hello!

So the bug is the following: in the case when a subtitle line contains lower case y or g characters, the following underneath line is displayed with noticeable bigger interline spacing as normally.  This is due something, that the y and the g characters have their lower-part hanging under the normal bottom of the other characters and so the whole subtitle line. It may seam a minor bug, but can be worsen the whole fluidity of the subtitle reading, according the randomly and frequently changing space between the subtitle lines. All this -of course- with Himedai Player.

This bug is also present in any firmware since the beginning, I'm quite surprised that no one has reported here since (and also that it missed even Himedia's attention, as it hasn't been fixed yet). And is definitely a bug, since on almost all other media players have the handling of these characters correctly solved and no line spacing shifting present at all.

Please report it to Himedia and give us a feedback regarding the issue.

I know about this option, but changing the line spacing to as big as to avoid the space switching is just results in too much space between the lines and not only would look unesthetic, but also makes it more difficult to read, also compared to the players "default" setting. We need a fix to keep the default spacing setting constantly, even in the case of the "reaching down" characters in the lines.

I have consulted with other members on another forum, and have concluded, that it's definitely a bug: the player just places the base-line of the subtitle line in the wrong space.

I already did. Doesn't change the fact that the player always puts the baseline of the subtitle at the lowest point of the text and then adjust the spacing to these lines. Annoying bug since the beginning but I almost forgot it since I use MX Player.

BTW HiMedia probably will not change font so use Custom font install with ChangeSubtitlesFonts script.

Ok I have based it on the wrong presumption, that changing the spacing settings would affect it at all. Tested it by myself and it's right that it doesn't solve the issue.

I've also made a little srt file to test this bug:  https://www.dropbox.com/s/b4w4oh654xdlbni/line%20spacing%20test%20sub.srt?dl=0. It's mostly noticeable with the y and the j characters, but also perceptible with the g and the p characters. Keep the eye on the line space changing between the upper and the under ooooo characters while testing.

pcristi: I guess you're on CFW 2.0.3, could you test it with the linked subtitle?! We're not quite sure if this has been -maybe- solved in 2.0.3. Also screenshot from both oooooyyyyooooo / oooooooooooooo and oooooooooooooo / oooooxxxxooooo states (the first two entry) would be welcomed.

No, it does not. As I said the problem is with the baseline of the subtitle not with the position.

On collage is visible when line have "yyyy" space line is bigger.


They choose strange way to avoid overwrite lines for gjpqy...
This not a real bug, but can stress our eyes special on part have a lot dialog with two lines.

I guess you are right. It's not a bug just really poor implementation. Still could be fixed or added to the requested feature list.

I can't consider poor implementation,  they didn't have this need for Chinese subtitles, listen to futeko when is was report overwrite lines for gjpqy (HMD 1.0.1) and too big default line space, they write code to get different space line when gjpqy letter are present, OK not our expectation let see if they will accepted to change it as feature request.

BTW  How is look on MX Player with respect space line.

Then we are lucky that they bother to translate the menu to English I guess...
Anyway, I still consider it poor implementation as a non-chinese, but thank you for testing and reporting this to HiMedia.

Besides it's obviously a bad implementation, I would rather call it a bug too. Compared the others waiting to be fixes it might seam minor, but in MPOV it's a bug after all, because subtitle displaying should not work like this in any player in general. Sometimes tiny things could have relevant impact on the overall user experience too. It's up to Himedia if they would take this chance (after they would be properly informed regarding the issue).
