Network share Android 7
« on: January 13, 2017, 09:18:21 AM »
OK, finally got round to installing Android 7 on my Q10Pro. Followed the instructions and did it in two steps and all seems good.

One of the (many) things I use this box for is playing Video files from a HDD attached to a Linksys router on my network, tried to map the share on the Linksys from the Media player, can browse to it fine but when connecting get numerous errors wrong password - its not, new server error - whatever that means, LAN has stopped, please restart - it hadn't. Tried in Kodi, this worked a little better, browse to the share add it with username/password, browse the contents, select a file to play and "Mount error", same with any file. (I should mention I tried both browsing for the share and adding by servername\sharename and IP\sharename with the same results)

Reinstalled Android 7 no change, revert to android 5.1 and all working fine again, what's going on here, can anyone help? I would really like to upgrade but not being able to add a network share to the Q10Pro is a deal breaker.

Nice to know I'm not alone, but I would like to be able to upgrade and map a share.

How is the HDD formated: NTFS, maybe a Linksys proprietary format? What if you remove the password?

Spent a few hours this morning playing with this box and with Android 5.1 all works perfectly, however as soon as I put Android 7 on it, no connection to shares on my Linksys (With or without password protection) gives numerous errors "LAN app has stopped" "Password incorrect" "Network error" "New server error" even gives a password error on shares with no password protection.

I can get access to the videos on the share by turning on the Media server on the Linksys and accessing via UPnP on the Q10 not ideal but it works, same goes in Kodi.

I also noticed that the video app from Amazon keeps crashing, can browse around Amazon Video fine, but as soon as I start to watch a Video, any video "Amazon Video has stopped working. Please restart" followed by "Amazon video keeps stopping"

I did not have any of these issues with the firmware based on Nougat. Did you by any chance restore anything? I strongly recommend installing Nougat and not restoring anything, just to be sure you do not get any issues. I would reset everything and reinstall Nougat firmware.

Nope no restore, clean install. No change with latest update  :'( :'( :'(

I must say the support provided for this device has been minimal, thanks for the comments but I was looking for some help from futeko, one of the reasons I purchased this model over others was the promise of "Expert support"

This has also been doing my head in. I've been trying to get Samba sharing from my Win7 PC through the Media Centre with Android 7, version 2 and 2.1 without success. Version 5 was fine.
I can see the workgroup when entering the LAN option but accessing any of the listed shared files didn't work, with a network error message.
I'd hoped that the new version 2.1 would fix it but it hasn't. Then I tried one share and got in, and another, but still others were thrown out. It then dawned on me that the box doesn't like a path that contained a space. I changed the shared filenames on my PC deleting the spaces and bingo, after reassigning the share status I was able to access the file. Subfile names with spaces are fine., but the first share path has to not contain spaces. Using an underscore instead of a space is also ok.
Not an ideal state of affairs but at least there seems to be a workaround.

The errors you are getting are not typical. That's why you got few replies.

To be honest, if you're getting all those errors it sounds like there's a problem with the firmware install. I would suggest installing 2.0.1 using the new Android 5.1 > Android 7 firmware. This will eliminate the possibility of a mistake in how the update was performed with the 2.0.0 migration firmware.

Clean install done here and I get similar problems when attempting to stream from my PC using Samba from MediaCentre. In every case I can reproduce, removing spaces from the PC folder name has enabled the folder to be accessed. Subfolders with spaces are ok, but the original path cannot contain spaces. Underscores in the place of spaces work ok so for me that is an acceptable workaround.
FWIW, I'm using Window 7 with no password protection on my shared folders. Folders have shared read access to 'everyone'. Note the problems have not been tested from within Kodi. I figured getting MediaCentre working first would enable the wrapper to function.
Well, now I've tested Samba access from Kodi 17. Nada, zilch. Connection times out every time. I can't even see the PC's network. I do have Nero MediaHome on my PC that was a freebie with my Bluray player and I can access media from Kodi 17 using PnP if I start that.

I've had enough of it and dropped back to Android 5. I also dropped further back to 1.07 as that release seemed to be the most stable.
Samba shares are now working perfectly again from Kodi 16 and MediaCentre. The problem of shifting drive letters hasn't really been fixed as Android 7 still picks drives up and orders them when and how it feels like it, and the addon script to fix framerates for the earlier release means there's little else that makes me miss the later release. Shame I lost my media info in the change around...

Yep I have tried exactly that, I am on my third install of 7 now one to 2.0.0 and two to 2.0.1, never any access to shares on 7 cant break the shares on 5.1 The fact my issue is not typical is of little consolation I'm afraid :(

The point regarding spaces is a good one, I will look into that tomorrow, I did not think of that as almost all OSes have eliminated the space problem ages ago, not introduced it with an update :)

The space problem has always been there with Q5/Q10 Pro firmware, it's not been introduced with this update.

The most compatible and possibly best firmware at the moment is 1.0.9. I see no reason to go back to 1.0.7.

@parisno, it's of little consolation to me either. Your problem might not be typical but you're not alone. The difficulty could be due to any number of combinations of router/PC hardware/Windows version/firewall. There IS a difference in the way sharing is handled between V1/Android 5 and V2/Android 7, it just doesn't affect many people. Fortunately, HiMedia is still supporting the Android 5 version, which in itself is interesting as one has to ask the question, "Why? What is wrong with the newer version that they still need to support the older one?"

Edit: followed Futeko's advice and installed Android 5.1 v1.09. Looks ok so far, thanks.
