PQ settings MY ADVISE! (after 4 whole days testing)
« on: December 12, 2016, 03:19:19 PM »
Hi Guys,

Due to the absence of a good PQ setting documentation i have been working on getting it the right way.... I came tot the conclusion that the best PQ comes out by using your TV settings (TV mode adjustment / Calibration) and NOT the Q10 settings/available options.

Therefor i have set every setting OFF. How tot do so.. (worth the test). Resume everybody has at least a Full-HD tv )proberbly a 4K TV.

Go to your Himedia media player en set the screen resolution tot "1080P - 60hz". This is the signal the Q10 sends to your TV. (your TV, iff 4K, upscales it. Your TV has a much better upscaling chip then the Q10).
Enter "Display". (you might think it has something to do with the picture, but is has only influence to the sound handling (output)). Change it to whats fits you best. (RAW means -> pass thru)
Press HOME en go to settings. Scroll down to advanced settings.
Change HDR mode (temporally) to SDR.
Start your hi media player again and play a 1080 movie. Press menu on the remote and enter "advanced options"
Go to "PQ Settings" and set display mode to "standard"
Go to "Imprex engine". Set everything option here to "OFF"!
Press home again, go to settings, scroll down to advanced settings en now change HDR mode from SDR to AUTO or HDR10 (iff your TV supports this).
Set your Deep COLOR to "YCBCR444 10 BIT" (or 8 BIT iff your TV doesn't have a 10 bit display).

Now play a movie en enter your TV settings/picture mode. Use these setting to adjust the picture you like most (a lot of calibration tips by TV on google).

This did it for me!

Hope it helps you out to.

Cheers,
Jeff

What if I want to play 4K material? All my HDR(10bit) files are of course in 4K-resolution.

This has given me a much better PQ! thank you!

Running on a professionally calibrated 65 inch 4k OLED.

All other sources, picture was great, with this I was rather underwhelmed.  This was the reason, letting the TV do the work as intended and it's much better.

Thanks!  8)

I have a few reflection and correction to these setting, based on the information I had gathered during a few months of self-smarting on the internet and relevant forums. (I'm still not an expert tho, and could be that I miss in something described under:)

change HDR mode from SDR to AUTO or HDR10 (iff your TV supports this).-> I guess if the TV doesn't support HDR (like all 1080p TVs), than it's best to leave it SDR. Also for even HDR capable TVs it useless to set it to HDR if the video source doesn't contain HDR information. (Like the majority of today's videos, except those sample ones).

Set your Deep COLOR to "YCBCR444 10 BIT" (or 8 BIT iff your TV doesn't have a 10 bit display). -> I presume that as almost all material available today (and will be so on) are using 4:2:0 colourspace with 8bit depth, so the best still would be to set 4:2:2 in settings, as that would be the most closest to the source's. Everything else is upscaling, which may affect negatively to the PQ. That's independently from whether the TV supports 10bit or just 8bit. Of course for higher encoded -rare- sources the best is to set as close as "native" you can.

Go to your Himedia media player en set the screen resolution tot "1080P - 60hz".-> That's OK in most of the cases, but for 4K videos the best is to set the resolution to 4K as well.
