Q10 pro power supply problem
« on: November 27, 2016, 07:33:37 PM »
A few days ago I purchased the product q10 pro
the ac power supply suddenly heated up and burned Now I can not use the streamer
My country's electricity is 220v 50Hz
Is this a common problem?
Do streamer burned or just the power supplyer?
Is there any warranty in situation like this?

Are you talking about a Futeko provided PSU or a Himedia original PSU purchased via another source? If it is Futeko's they will answer all your questions.

The PSU can be replaced anyway with another compatible unit. Recommend a quality build 12V 3A (or 4A)  earthed PSU as a replacement, specifically when using an Internal HDD with it. You need to try if the player was affected or not yourself, nobody can tell. There is a decent chance that it survived.

I have replied to your email.

What country are you in?

PSU failure is very uncommon. In fact you are the only case we've had.

The supplied PSU works perfectly well for Q5/Q10 Pro with or without internal HDD. You may want to use a higher amperage PSU if you're attached many external USB HDDs (a powered hub is another better option in this scenario). Some people are using more expensive PSUs for increased audio/video quality (less signal noise - it's a marginal gain).

Seen the fact that it broke down after just a few days and heated, indicates a weak or wrong component was assembled.

It was being used in a country we don't sell many boxes to. It's going to be impossible to figure out exactly what caused the problem but something like a voltage spike is possible.

The PSU with Q5/Q10 Pro has proved very reliable so far!

Nobody can tell indeed. I am not saying the provided PSU is of bad quality in any way.

But this is exactly another good reason to buy a high quality build earthed PSU as amongst others this deals much better with power spikes.  Highly recommended in countries with unstable grid feeds. Putting a voltage stabilizer/filter in front may be essential too.

I have also found any standard external hard drive PSU from WD or Seagate works fine as a temporary replacement (even with an internal 4Tb 7200rpm HDD installed).
I leave the original PSU in the lounge and just unplug the Q10 Pro when I want to do major file copying to or from my PC using the rear USB 3.0 port.
My unit is always plugged into a UPS in either the lounge or PC room, however (so no power spikes).

The units provided with external HDD enclosures are typically 12V 1.5A which just may still work, specifically if nothing is connected to other USB ports. Would use a bigger unit myself of at least 12V 2A with your way of working. You really run that one at peak load specifically making copies.

Always use a fixed set of PSU's for all my 12V media players and external HDD enclosures so follow the same concept of just plugging over including a plug adapter to deal with 1.2 and 1.5 mm inner pin versions.
