Pretty disappointing experience so far.
« on: November 27, 2016, 04:57:13 AM »
Hi guys,

I've just upgraded from an ACRYAN PLAYON HD2 and I have to say I am very underwhelmed by the experience so far.  I bought the PLAYON back in 2011 for $260 with a 2TB drive included.

a) the fact that I couldn't insert a 4TB drive and format it inside the Q10 is a major oversight.  Only owning a mac and no enclosures I ended up having to format it in my old PLAYON HD2.

b) file navigation is clunky and not intuitive at all.  Where the heck do I find my usb drive from within Kodi to add new media?

c) the IMDB scraper made a complete mess of my library.. my folders are named like this 'FILM TITLE - DIRECTOR (YEAR, COUNTRY)' with matching .mkv/.avi files in each and artwork with the same name.  Do I have to go and rename every folder and file just to get it to work? surely a script can be written that uses google as a search engine with 'folder name + IMDB' to find the correct movies?

d) I tried YAMJB back in 2011 and found it so time consuming to get anything set-up that slightly resembled people's youtube product reviews and I gave up.   I  expected a lot to have improved in 5 years but it seems to still be a major issue.  I just want to plug my media in and let the player do the work.

Yes, this is a grumble.

This has nothing to do with Q10 itself. It's just your first time dealing with an Android media player. It takes a bit getting used to it but unfortunately there aren't any good alternatives other than Android, aside from building a good HTPC.

The incorrect library handling is the matter of KODI and the scrappers (so it would be the same on every device running KODI), unfortunately it's not very felxible and intuitive and too sensitive to its own rules. :-\ But once you learned and named everything right, you'll be fine with it, here: http://kodi.wiki/view/Naming_video_files

Thanks, I get that for new files as I get them, that's an easy change but it doesn't help for the 2TB of files and folders that are perfectly named in my own format.  There is no way to my knowledge of batch processing them either.

Yes, your grumbles relate to both the operating system and to Kodi, not the Q10 Pro.
*  Recommend that 1st you read the FAQ on this forum (I found it very helpful setting up my own Q10 Pro).
*  Kodi is different from what you are used to.  I also found it different from the WDTV that I used for years (and had to change my own directory structures, especially for TV folders).  It is well worth your while coming to terms as Kodi is multi-platform :   http://kodi.wiki/view/First_time_user
Once you get used to Android and Kodi, you won't want to go back to old hardware ;D

I would pay a fortune to WD to build a new media player... I really miss their media players...

I'm using tinymediamanager to manually point to the right imdb links.  Should only take about 2 weeks.

I agree kodi is very inflexible with naming but once set up it works well.  More flexibilty in acceptable naming formats would be a big improvement.  As stated this is not a HiMedia issue.

The latest android and 2.0.0 has brought a very noticeable improvement in picture quality, not sure how this has been achieved but on my OLED TV the picture now pops with detail and colour without being overblown. A bigger improvement than I detected going from the old Q5 to the Q5 Pro.

Update: So I finally got Kodi working with all my media scanned in.  Looks great and it's lovely having all the artwork in place.

* It refuses to show recently added files in the library even after rescan

* STUTTERING... really really bad on so many films at 23.976.  This is def a Kodi bug as when I play the same files with media centre there is no stuttering.

There are two ways to fix stuttering at 23.976 in Kodi:

1. Install Kodi auto-switch addon. This will allow you to use Kodi's internal player (DVDplayer) with full auto-switching. See here: http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=1015.0

2. Use Kodi+wrapper. This is the recommended option because performance and picture quality are best when using HiMediaplayer (the player uses by wrapper). From box main menu go to May Apps - Wrapper and select 'Use wrapper player'. For this to work properly you need to set main box/Android settings correctly. From box main menu go Settings - Playback and enable 24Hz mode.

I'm not sure why rescan isn't working in Kodi. The version of Kodi installed on Q5/Q10 Pro is entirely standard so it's a Kodi setup problem. Help here: http://kodi.wiki/view/Updating_or_removing_videos

Thanks so much for the help on the wrapper and auto switching.  I hope this can all be rolled into the next update automatically for other new users.

Okay, So I'm really loving this player so far.  The main frustrating thing missing for me is the abiility to change the aspect ratio to my liking on the fly.  It apprears my only option is Go to Settings->Playback, and there you can set the "Maintain Aspect Ratio" to eighter "Full screen" (strech to your TV's) or "Keep ratio" (leaves source aspect as it is).

If there was the option to select all popular aspect ratios from the menu button that would be fantastic!

I hope this might be the fix to my problems since i am experiencing alot of stuttering with mit q10. I was on 1.08, upgraded to 1.09 and now i even switched to 2.01 and Andoid 7 but the stuttering is still there with some of my files. I tested them with my Laptop and they work fine but on the q10 an major issue. I really hope this is the fix because i already spend so much time and energy fixing this issue. Thank you!

I tried your suggestion futeko.com, suggestion number 2. The problem now is that the player is too big for my screen, is there any way to resize the player to actually fit the screen? I tried the kodi calibration but that changed nothing. Thank you!

Regards

Is the rest of the OS also too big for screen? If so, from home screen go Settings - Display - Screen size position.

If the problem is that the video is stretching to fit the screen then go Settings - Playback - Maintain aspect ratio: Keep ratio.

When playing using wrapper it's the Anroid settings that matter (for video/sound) not Kodii settings.
