You cant get any HD Sound on optical output. Its limited to core sound of dolby and dts. So any other above core sound, like DTS HD MA or Dolby True HD(Dolby Atmos or dts:X), its only available via HDMI. ;)

agree with you , and that seems to be the only difference between using optical SPDIF passthrough and hdmi audio output...  even the sound quality is pretty close.

Sadly it is also true to the analogue RCA outputs, which was a bit dissapointing, when I had to discover this deficiency. One must need one of the newest amplifiers to get the sound out of True-HD sources, which I don't think that trivial and casual even now. That's why I find missleadingly incomplete the according deteals of the specifications, listed here, or at even elsewhere.

it will work only when you have a m2ts/ts file with the original THD+AC3 core - mkvtoolnix removes the core AC3 from Dolby TrueHD and only bitstream is possible, but as the others guys explained - optical/coaxial SPDIF can b**/passthrough only i.e. DVD audio (DTS or Dolby Digital) 5.1

so the solution is to use eac3to http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=125966 to convert your TrueHD from the mkv file to THD+AC3 both audio again and remux in m2ts/ts file - not in MKV - simply not possible

Code: [Select]
C:\>eac3to John_Wick.mkv
M2TS, 1 video track, 1 audio track, 1:41:13, 24p /1.001
1: h264/AVC, 1080p24 /1.001 (16:9)
2: TrueHD, English, 7.1 channels, 48kHz

C:\>eac3to John_Wick.mkv 2: John_Wick.thd+ac3

..... it take some time and creates file John_Wick.thd+ac3 (which is Dolby TrueHD + core Dolby Digital (AC3)

and then you can use TSMuxer to make a m2ts file - the final result is

C:\>eac3to John_Wick.m2ts
M2TS, 1 video track, 1 audio track, 1:41:13, 24p /1.001
1: h264/AVC, 1080p24 /1.001 (16:9)
2: TrueHD/AC3 (Atmos), English, 7.1 channels, 48kHz
   (embedded: AC3, 5.1 channels, 640kbps, 48kHz)

then you will hear AC3 5.1 from your SDPIF output

Regards

Since my according Thread is somehow deserted, I would like to ask you, cause it seem you may know the answer: If I set SPDIF output to PCM (in Himedia Box) will the AC3, DTS and Dolby Digital formats also be converted and outputted through the SPDIF output as PCM correctly? So with an external SPDIF-analouge DAC like this one: http://www.fiio.eu/index.php?route=product/product&path=61&product_id=57, I could make them sound on my analogue active stereo speakers? ???

The DAC's specifications says that DD and DTS formats are not supported, but what's the case when -and if- the media box is capable to convert it to pure PCM?! At least that's what i would conclude from the naming of the SPDIF options in the setting menu.

Thanks for the reply!  :)

Hi,

I use usually HDMI connection between my Himedia and my receiver and currently don't have a proper cables to test SPDIF.
But my tests after this conversion ---> all MKV with Dolby TrueHD to M2TS with Dolby TrueHD + AC3 core I can hear only 2.0 PCM output from the player.
The only way to listen multichannel PCM is the movie's audio to be multichannel PCM.

Seems decoding to PCM from some other codec like Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS-HD Master Audio is supported only to stereo mode.
Look this topic http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=308

P.S. I think you want exactly this - anything decoded to stereo. I've remebered also - SPDIF doesn't support multichannel PCM, only HDMI does.

Thanks, it's a bit more promising info now, I just hope it will work the same way with SPDIF.

(And sure the SPDIF supports multichannel audio, since 2 channels are far enough "multichannel" for me, for now... ;D)

Regardless the joke, it Juts it would be better to know it for shure, from someone with exact experience wit the SPDIF...

Hello! Is your SPDIF setting PCM on the Player?!
And can you test it with 1080p (or under) mkv-s with DTS and DTS HDMA?!

Thank you!

:) of course. As I've explained, it works because the file structure in ISO contains .m2ts files and .ssif if it is 3D. Those files contain the full version of Dolby TrueHD i.e. Dolby Digital = AC3 and that's why you will hear DTS or Dolby Digital audio via SPDIF
