Can't share files with Windows 7 <-> Q10 Pro
« on: October 16, 2016, 11:27:00 AM »
Hello!

I have set "SHARE" for a couple of my folders on my Winows 7 PC. But in Q10 Pro Media Center under "LAN"->Search my PC doesn't even show up at all (It says "No server"). Tried with Kodi and search for an SMB source, but also didn't work at all. Im in a Workgroup, not in a Homegroup on my PC. Permissions set to "Everyone"->"Read" on the selected folders in Win 7 sharing options.

What am I doing wrong? ???

Thanks for the replies!

Have you turned on Samba shares?

Do you mean on  the Q10 Pro?! No I haven't. As far as I know it's only use when sharing from the Q10 Pro and not to share other network folders with the Q10 Pro.

Am I right or wrong? ???

Thanks!

This is a reasonable guide to setting up open sharing on Windows 7: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/share-files-and-printers-between-windows-7-and-xp/

I have done everything just as it says in the article, but with no succes. The strange thing is that in Windows File Explorer I can see my computer name and the shared folders listed under "Network" but cant open them at all. It tells the following Network error messege: "The network location cannot be reached", so it seems that I can't even open them in my computer where from I would like to share them. ???

Any futher hints, tipps would be appreciated, thanks!

Thanks, Will have try with mapping the folders, but I don't thing thats the issue for me. Yes, I'm trying to share also 2 extrenal HDD's along with my notebook's internal one, but the drives are constantly connected to the same USB ports and getting always the same drive letters from the OS.

However: I have at least figured out a bit, that my firewall (Norton) has also something to do with this metter. When I turned the firewall off completly I was able to get to the shared folders on the Q10 Pro, but only in the case I manyually typed in everything in the Media Center: Computer name, Folder, Account and pass (same in KODI).  As soon as I turn back the firewall, everything becomes inaccessible again.

But even with completly disabled firewall, I still unable to automaticly find my computer with "LAN"->Search option in Media Center and neighter with KODI's SMB source search. Disabling firewall for a longer period is obviously not a viable way, so I'm still searching for options and waiting for other suggestions to resolve.

I have bought this device (and jet also my freshly bought router) with the confidence in mind, that I will be able to share media and comfortably stream it through my local network. Thus' so far I wasn't able to solve this since almost 1 week. All my devices in the LAN are -theoreticly- capapble to this without any hussle, but the picture here shows something isn't quite right, and I still need to do more unexpected, annoying labour and diggin' on the interrnet for a solution...  :-\

Try some setting in Norton...i think that there is problem...turn off norton firewall, turn on windows firewall.
Turn off password in network and sharing center.
I also have to put in properties-security of the folder i share "everyone"..did you do that?

All working super at me...MEDIA CENTER-LAN-AUTO SEARCH-MY COMP and all foolders are there and playing well.

I don't want to stick to Winows firewall or to any other than Norton. It's the best in security/feature wise and -as I have a basic laptop bought in 2011- it uses the lesser resources on the system, which is the most important in my case.

I have allready tried to turn off pass protection and also added the "Everyone" permission to "Read" on the folders, but still with no succes. But I don't think setting like  these would cause the Media Center to unable to detect my laptop at all on the network. Will go and try my -so far- last known option, and add specific TCP/UDP Firewall rules in Norton to allow traffic between my laptop and the Q10 Pro's ip. Hope that will work at least... ???

But thanks for the hints anyway, and any other new ones would be appreciated!

I have done a bit step ahead, with adding a Firewall rule in norton to allow all connection between my laptop an the Q10 Pro, I'm able now to add "MAUALLY and INDIVIDUALLY" all my shared folders by adding the ip adress and the folder name in Kodi. But only when public sharing is on and password protected is off in the "Advanced Sharing Options" in Windows.

Another strange ting: by adding my computer name, instead of the ip in KODI it doesn't work anymore. Tho' the previously added folder with this method (with adding the //Admin-PC/Folder) in Media center still opens fine. Hows that?

So i was able to finally watch a full movie with network sharing last night. Tho this still the most complicated and niggling way to add shared folders on Q10 Pro, I guess the network discovery under the "LAN"->Search and "Search SMB Source" in KOID must have been work just as it should instead this dull and roundabaout method, but obviously id doesn't. And adding -my final hope, jet- the firewall rule in Norton still dosn't helped this at all.

Still waiting for some tips to keep the hope alive, thanks!

I was unable to access my shared folders on a Windows7 PC in the same local network.
Did spent almost two days and tried every option available with no success.

Finally I looked into the local security policies of my windows7 PC.
Run secpol.msc > local policies > security options and noticed that the setting "Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and  shares" was set to "enabled".
After changing "enabled" into "disabled", everything was running flawlessly and my Himedia could access every shared folder on my windows7 pc using Mediacenter or ES file explorer.
