No.

It will recognise DVD/BD drives that have a data mode (so they appear as external USB drives) and allow you to play files from the discs, but it will not recognise the drive for playback of DVD/BD discs.

Not entirely accurate. It will also play 1:1 copied/burned DVD/BD video discs as long as these are fully unprotected/decrypted. Big surprise for all who tested it initially. To change a disc the entire drive should be Ejected, disconnected from USB and next be USB reconnected again after the disc swap. 
It will not play commercial pressed DVD/BD disc as purchased in shops as essential required DRM features/ licenses and decodes are missing.

This at least for tested brands/products. Just search the forum for more information.

It works really well - you just need to install pcristi`s mount on fixed point script, and the BD drive will show under the SDCard.

nearly all TV's have many hdmi ports available for a number of devices. Even more if you run a receiver.

I have never seen a UHD/BD/DVD/SACD standalone player which will work with external subtitles (including time shifting these) or even download these on-demand (features used often by me). Some also love Movie Wall features etc etc. The added value is in the many more features available on media players next to using a single device with a consistent user interface.

Also external USB-Players often have better compatibility with self burned discs, specifically if you actually get a burner and use the same device for burning (PC attached) and playback (media player attached) that big problem is gone.

Last but not least is getting rid of Cinavia, region codes and other nasty protection problems when playing copied discs.

As far as HiMedia's subtitle handling goes: it still has the mayor bug with <i> </i> characters displayed instead of the correct italic lines with .srt subs and the built-in subtitle styler is rather very basic and lacks many options and styles to get a nice and also readable subtitle (good opposite example is Zidoo's). So I have to make my own styled .PGS subtitles and mux in the .mkv every time before playback.
