Kodi 17 nightly build experiences
« on: September 27, 2016, 06:58:25 PM »
Last week i have uninstalled Jarvis and did a clean install with the latest nightly build of Krypton.
It works ok with wrapper and Krypton's videoplayer using Looun's latest version Kodi ADDON- Frequency Switcher.
Also configured with MySQL for Music and Video database.

Only issue i have is i cannot get audio pass-trough via hdmi to work on my Yamaha RX-V775 though it works flawless with wrapper.

looking for other Krypton experiences, maybe even a fix for audio pass-trough.

[From Kodi forum] Android - Passthrough Changes with v17
Quote from: 'fritsch'
Hi,

I revisted the Audiotrack-Sink for Android the last days and made it API conform. That means, everyone gets what the official Android API supports: https://developer.android.com/reference/android/media/AudioFormat.html#ENCODING_AC3
Concerning passthrough that means:

< v21 API: nothing
v21, v22 API: AC3, EAC3 (broken on most firmware, please bug your vendor)
v23: AC3, EAC3, DTS, DTS-HD (if supported, not on the Nexus 5)
v24 (Android N): AC3, EAC3, DTS with the new IEC API, we miss hardware / software to implement dts-hd, truehd
On Nvidia Shield: AC3, EAC3, DTS, DTS-HD, TrueHD

For AMLogic devices that means most likely no passthrough at all, cause of kodi is built without AML specifics, so that the vendors start to use the default API. As we are not inhuman or something, if you rebuild yourself with AML enabled, you will get dependend on device: AC3, EAC3, DTS, DTS-HD, TrueHD which I implemented last March with a core device by wetek.

The old PCM PT way was removed. Why? Starting with newer API there is a FLOAT mixer internally, which might harm your ears, as mixing is going on and that might produce a significant noise. We were warned by Android Audio staff to not use these hacks.

Whenever the first of you has Android N device (not on Nexus) available, please ping me - happy to fully implement DTS-HD, TrueHD for these.

Vendor firmware bugs
- Some Android TVs only support 384 kb/s AC3 and error out on 640 kb/s
- EAC3 7.1 is broken on all FireTV firmware. I suggest disabling EAC3 and use Dolby Transcoding _and_ speakers set to 2.0. It makes no sense to passthrough if you can output 6 or more PCM channels

HiMedia Android 5.1.1 firmware not support AC3 passtrough with nightly build of Kodi v17 (Krypton), and DTS passtrough work with almost all older build until  beta 2.

Hi pcristi
Any change audio pass-trough will be implemented in the Kodi ADDON- Frequency Switcher?

The frequency switcher only changes the way video is handled, not audio.

It's likely that the upcoming Android 7 Q5/Q10 Pro firmware update will fix passthrough for HD-Audio in Kodi 17.

At this point it's just a waiting game.
The earliest eta for a fw with Android 7 is late october - which will bring advances, but no doubt there will be new issues.
Combine that with the current, highly unpolished state of KODI Krypton for Android...
There is no reason to update till the end of the year.

Passthrough for HD-Audio in Kodi 17 + Android 7.0 look like not possible, @fritsch posted Kodi forum #91.

Dtshd, TrueHD won't work with N Api. Google missed to include support for it, we are in contact with them.

I hope HiMedia will fixed AC3+DTS passthrough for Kodi 17, both stop work in Kodi beta 3 or newest build.

It's likely that the upcoming Android 7 Q5/Q10 Pro firmware update will fix passthrough for HD-Audio in Kodi 17.

I fully expect 5.1 audio to work with Kodi 17 + Android 7 on Q5/Q10 Pro.

It will be a shame if HD-Audio doesn't work, but it reinforces the wisdom of the wrapper based solution. It's more robust than relying on Kodi / Google to implement features.
