Subtitles on Kodi

Hey guys

The Q10 is my 2nd Android box. I used previously an Xtreamer 4K Prodigy. Every single thing sucked about that box but there is ONE thing I find myself missing about it : subtitles management in Kodi.

I just don't get why the menu GUI is different. It's the exact same App on both boxes. Is the Q10 forcing its own interface in Kodi? Every single screen looks exactly the same EXCEPT the video menu.
Now this wouldn't really be a problem, except that I personally find subtitles management terrible on the Q10.
Downloading a subtitle for a video you're watching is infuriating for the following reasons:
1- All available subtitles are renamed to match the EXACT video file that you're watching. This is misleading as I end up 90% of the time with wrong subtitles that I need to manually adjust.
2- The subtitle selection window is very small so all subtitles show up truncated. So even if point 1 above was resolved, it would still be tough identifying the correct subtitles.
3- For the life of me I couldn't find how to find a way to switch between Subtitles providers. I initially used both Subscene and OpenSubtitles. In the Xtreamer, I could easily switch between both using tabs. On the Q10 I couldn't find how to do that so I just disabled the OpenSubtitles add-on...
4- No display of ratings for subtitles...

In order of priority I would say point 1 is the most critical one. I really hope it's something that is readily fixable and even something I might have missed when initally setting up the Q10.

I know NiceMonkey here used to have the Xtreamer so might know best what I am describing above. Hope you can help me with this !

Very simple Nick81 when playing a video KODI switches to Wrapper which is the proprietary Himedia Video Player also used within Media Center. That is the real time playback view and functionality you see from within KODI. P4K (as we call Xtreamer Prodigy 4K mostly) uses the standard Kodi player instead. The reason for using Wrapper is mainly getting HD Audio output in RAW mode, Imprex 2.0 to work and some HW-Acceleration for 3D-BD. You can switch between Wrapper and Kodi players using the Wrapper APP.  You may prefer that, just give it a try 

Work needs to be done on the standard Himedia media players urgently, to be honest all of them (Video, Audio and Picture players).  As most customers use KODI work is done thus far only on Video Player (as it is used by Wrapper). The European population liking/needing a plain and simple player using only a standard remote is growing fast however (we are aging fast).

HiMedia are working to improve subtitle download in himediaplayer.

If subtitles are important then you can always use Kodi internal player, which gives all the standard Kodi options (including the ability to use Kodi subtitle addons). Either uninstall wrapper entirely (My Apps - Wrapper - 'Use Kodi player') or when selecting a video in Kodi press menu button on remote and go Play using - DVDplayer.

Yes, I know that option, but it is not convenient. Only a workaround. Do you know if there are plans for the Q5/10 pro to be directly supported by Kodi (HD Audio & 4k/HDR) without the need of Wrapper?

It's very unlikely that Kodi will directly support Q5/Q10 Pro. Kodi 17 is going in the other direction, it has removed the limited Kodi 16 hardware support for some Android chipsets (Rockchip / Amlogic).

When Q10 Pro launched HiMedia sent free boxes to certain key Kodi people but nothing came of it.

Apart from subtitle download, which Himedia are going to improve, the Kodi+wrapper solution is the best way forward for high quality/performance Kodi in Android. It removes the need for Kodi devs to implement hardware support, which they lack the resources to do whilst allowing all hardware features to be accessed using Kodi's superior scraping +  interface.

Hi futeko! Do you know if there is any progress with this issue from Himedia side?

It seems it was one of the first ones (also mentioned here http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=1301.msg10139#msg10139) and at least in my unit (Android 5, las firmware 1.0.9), subtitles still doesn't work when using kodi wrapper (it doesn't use the subtitles addons, and it only found subtitles in english or nothing).

A workaround is to install a subtitle add-on in Kodi, play the movie using Kodi internal player and download the subtitle for it from the Kodi add-on. The downloaded subtitles will be saved to the movie directory so you can subsequently use them in Himediaplayer (or Kodi+wrapper). This gives you clunky access to all Kodi sub add-ons.

When HiMedia are back after Chinese New Year (next week) I will tell them that looser interpretation of subtitle gap timings is the top priority for fixing.

This is getting frustrating. I bought this as the "ultimate" android/kodi box.  It may not be the fault of himedia, but to say its not the ultimate, is an understatement.

Netflix streams 480p and the UI is completely unusable with a remote. Actually, the whole thing is pretty much unusable with just a remote (seriously, just try updating kodi through the app store with the remote!).  Now I have to chose between DD/DTS passthrough working or having subtitles?

An android/kodi box with builtin harddrive is something I really wanted, but I'm about to sell this box and get a shield tv or some SFF to run openelec.

The workaround solution above works and is better than using HiMedia's subtitle downloader. Kodi's subtitle addons have had years of development and will likely always be better than HiMedia's.

Netflix is 480p on all Android devices. This is a choice made by Netflix, HiMedia have tried to reach out to them but they aren't interested.

Media playback works fine with remote. Some apps are designed for phones and require a pointing device. The Rii MX3 airmouse is excellent.

The subtitle gap problem will be fixed. It's happened because HiMedia has stuck too strictly to specification. They know about it and will fix it.
