Can't copy to USB drives (1.0.7)
« on: August 22, 2016, 12:18:34 AM »
When I'm trying to copy files from one drives to a USB Thumb drive, I'm asked to select SD card

But there is no SD card to select from... Show hidden doesn't change anything.
It looks like WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE is not granted.

It all depends on the APP used. This is not a phone and APP's specifically designed for such devices may not look for USB attached HDD/drives, Wired Ethernet etc.
They may look for a Mobile Network or GPS and even fail if these can't be found. You can ask the owner/writer to modify the program only.

It was already requested to add MOVE/COPY features to the file browser pop-up menu (NEW, DELETE, RENAME) as many like to use those.

What app is that and running on what device? It's not a Q5/Q10 pro because of upper notification bar and resolution.

As Nice Monkey says, some apps will be designed for phones and won't work properly. Some of these apps do not expect a device to have any external storage beyond the internal SD card.

CM File Manager version 2.5.4 and you are right this is not a "screenshot" I just wanted to represent the window I was seeing for the lack of better words.

CM File Manager is has never caused me any privilege issues on any other devices. It's generally quite robust.

And since the lame builtin file manager is useless at managing files... I try ES File Manager (another credible one) see what happens and report back.

Ok this is very weird.

I'm having this problem with A Kingston HyperX 65Gb (USB3.0) which is formated in NTFS.

I tried with other USB thumb drives (2.0 and 3.0) and they do not have this privilege issue but they are FAT32.

So are you aware of any NTFS compatibility issues?

We've not had anything reported back re. NTFS compatibility problems.

Any luck using ES File Explorer?

You may also use exFAT which has no file-size limitation and is excellent for Sticks and SD-Cards.
Did not try with Q10 Pro  yet but works with multiple other Android based media players.

I have been using ES File Explorer myself since firmware 1.0.3 and it finds SD cards, USB drives and my full Windows Network, including NAS.

No matter the interface 1.0.7 can read NTFS but cannot write/delete.

I reformatted my drives to exFAT and everything works normally.

I won't declare "NTFS Read Only" as normal, in any device or OS. (But correct me if i'm wrong...)
This must be a Bug somekind...

Confirmed, this is not normal. It is neither normal for Q10 Pro. Use myself Samba Server on Q10 pro which let me access all media sources in read/write mode formatted with NTFS.  If the problem is limited to one stick type/brand I would live with the workaround. exFAT is in fact an excellent file system for USB-sticks and SD-CARDS. The portability between multiple platforms is becoming even better for exFAT than for NTFS (=The new defacto standard above 32 GByte).

If it is a generic problem the first thing to do is a full re-install using the pin procedure. For testing/reporting one should use standard file-browser  facilities included with the box being Media Center in this case (new, rename, delete are all write operations).

The provided NTFS drivers with Android are known not to be flexible and support only commonly used settings/variables. So some specific characteristics of a brand/type may lead to problems. Have seen this before on multiple Android based platforms for both flash and HDD drives.
For the same reason be sure to use only standard Windows for formatting to NTFS and no other tools or OS.

I initially thought it was USB brand related, then I had to erased something on the internal SATA... No can do and guess what, my internal drive was also NTFS... On my Q10 PRO 1.0.7 , NTFS is read only no matter what NTFS device/brand or where I plug the device.

And I agree, NTFS RO it's not normal. I'm not going to factory reset the thing for fun especially now that I'm aware of the limitation, I know what to do to work around it.

NTFS is definitely not read only on Q10 Pro. It's full read/write. If NTFS was read only it would have been mentioned a million times by now on this forum, it hasn't

I'm going to change the title of this thread because it's incorrect (in general at least).

What software are you using to format your drives to NTFS? As Nice Monkey says, try with standard Windows formatter.

Anyone else is having NTFS Read Only?

Also... I bought my Q10 PRO on Amazon. It came straight from China.

It has been asked before here and I couldn't find an answer.

Apparently there is a difference between the Chinese version and the Euro/Intl version...

Is there anything on the cardboard box or on the device itself that can indicate what version I have.

Maybe my 1.0.7 firmware differs than yours...

On my brand new box, I went from 1.0.5 to 1.0.7, NTFS is definitely RO on all ports.
Speaking of upgrade... I didn't do a factory reset upgrade... It was OTA keeping user settings.
