Apps don't run any more
« on: April 15, 2015, 10:00:04 PM »
Something really strange is happening on my Q5.
Tonight I updated Kodi to 14.2
Since few days there was something strange because there was no more possible to update the movies database.
So I was thinking that with the new release this problem can be fixed.
But this not happened so I try to removed the kodi app and start from the beginning with a new installation.
I was surprised that after the new installation Kodi didn't start any more.
So I tried an hard reset of the machine but nothing changed.
I also tryed to download the app from the web site using the browser but when I run Kodi I have received an error and the app didn't start.
So the app is loaded but when you run it you see just the first screen of Kodi that say waiting for the first run and then a black screen.
I also tryed to insstall SPMC from Google Play but same story.
It seems that is no more possible to install and run any application.
The internal Himedia player is working and I can see and run all the movies that I have on the NAS.
The only problem is the app.
Can you help me on this?

Just for clarity, can you install apps other than Kodi?

If it's just Kodi that's the problem then I suggest completely uninstalling it and starting from scratch. I think the problems have come from an incomplete uninstall. These steps should completely remove all traces of XBMC/Kodi and allow a fresh install:

Go to Settings - More - Apps.

In the install app list:

Find XBMC (the pre-installed 13.1). Select 'force stop' if the button is available. Now select in turn 'Clear cache', 'Clear data' and 'Uninstall'.
Find Kodi. Select 'force stop' if the button is available. Now select in turn 'Clear cache', 'Clear data' and 'Uninstall'.
Find SPMC. Select 'force stop' if the button is available. Now select in turn 'Clear cache', 'Clear data' and 'Uninstall'.

That should have purged XBMC/Kodi/SPMC and associated data from your system.

Now reinstall Kodi (http://kodi.tv/download/) and/or SPMC (http://spmc.semperpax.com/). Note that SPMC needs to be the website version (not Play Store) for it to run on the Q5.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, I will try this evening when I come back home.
The strange thing is that everything start when I have done the same istructions that you have written.
The pre installed XBMC has been removed at the begining.
I have clear cache, clear data and uninstall the kodi app.
Then I have installed the 14.2 from a USB pen drive where was the file downloaded from the official kodi download page.
For SPMC I didn't know that the Play Store version don't work.
Do you means download it from this site:

I tryed your suggestions but nothing.
The problem is related to only kodi or spmc installation.
I tryed to install other app and works.
It's for sure an incomplete uninstall because looking with ES3 I still can see a folder named org. Xbmc. Kodi under the Android folder with 500 MB of data but I can't remove this folder.
Any suggestion?

Yes. The Play Store version throws up an error when opened. It's also out of date.

Weird that it won't uninstall properly. That is where the problem lies though, something that a previous XBMC/Kodi install has left behind is causing new installs to fail. There are many third party uninstall apps in Play Store. I suggest trying a couple of those first and seeing if they do a better job. https://play.google.com/store/search?q=uninstall&c=apps&hl=en_GB

Beyond that a firmware reinstall would solve the problem but at the cost of you having to stat from scratch with your setup.

If a firmware reinstall can fix the problem I belive is the better solution.
At the momnet I don't have nothing because I have run also an hard reset of the system loosing all the app installed.
Could you please let me know how I can run the firmware reinstall?

Instructions and download here: http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=43.0

Process is quite easy. In summary: download update file, copy it to USB flash drive, boot Q5 with USB drive inserted and recovery button pressed.

I have followed the instruction for the firmware re installation but it seems that do not work.
I still see the old kodi installation files.
I also tryed a couple of uninstall app that you have suggested but do not delete the folder.
I believe the only way is to use an app that allow the folder deletion like root explorer but the Q5 must be rooted.
Can I root the Q5 without loose the warranty?
Or do you know an app that allow me to delete a folder without root the Q5?

If you still see the kodi folder then the firmware reinstall hasn't happened. The reinstall process will completely wipe the Q5.

When you tried to reinstall the firmware what happened? Did you get the an Android system logo and a progress bar?

Yes I can see the Android system logo then a process bar that say erasing, but everything is very fast.
What I can't see if the reboot after the re installation.
It start normally exactly like when I do the hard reset without the USB flash drive.
I am also thinking that the firmware re installation did not happen but I don't know what I can do.
This means that probably I can have the same problem when I will try to update to the new firmware?

If there was a problem with the update file or USB flash drive then you'd get a very quick Android system update screen and a flash of progress bar.

The progress bar part of the update should take around 1 minute.

The Q5 you have definitely takes updates because I remember flashing it (we sold it as B-grade on Ebay - am I right?).

I suggest trying the update again from scratch, making sure that the USB drive is formatted as FAT32 and that the update.zip file is copied as is to the USB drive (not extracted - there should be only one file on the USB drive 'update.zip').

Many thanks for the answer.
Yes you are right, you sold it as B-grade on Ebay.
Probably I have understood why was not possible to install the firmware.
You are talking about to have just the zip file on the USB drive and I remember there was other files and not only the zip file.
Can be this the reason?

That sounds like the reason.

Only one file on the USB flash drive, 'update.zip'.

This is the file that I copyed on the USB flash drive:
Q5 4K3D. 17-JAN-2015. FIRMWARE HMD-1.0.7 FINAL FUTEKO-EN.zip
Inside this zip there are 2 files:
update.zip
readme.txt

Do I have to copy on the flash USB drice only the file update.zip file?
