Hard Disk Drive hotter comparing to computer use

I use WD caviar Blue for movie storage. However, the temperature is way hotter than when attached in computer. Is this only me or everyone experienced the same.  I thought that if Q10 pro use the same type of connecting, the current in HDD should be the same and so is temperature of HDD. Could anyone explain this or suggest any solution for this? because I really concern that with this condition, continuous use of HDD shall affect the longevity of both HDD and Q10 pro

Temperature does not depend on the type of connection used but on the cooling provided by the box they reside in. WD Blue should not give a heat problem. All my HDD's when put inside stay silent and cool. Are you sure to close the top lid always?

On the lid is a cooling pad and the lid itself in fact acts as the heatsink for the HDD mounted inside, both the Q10 Pro chassis and the fan do little for the HDD cooling. They hardly influence each other which is a very nice design. Do not put anything on top of the player as that will block the cooling of the lid hence HDD inside. It minimal influences the cooling of the player itself and is not a real problem when no HDD is mounted.

I did close the top lid always, but the heat transfer to this top lid as well. When I attach this HDD as media storage only on my computer, it is not hot, just a little bit warm which is barely recognizable even there is nothing for cooling this HDD.

When no HDD is mounted, there is no problem with heat problem at all.

Don't get the message here?  What are you trying to say?

The top lid and the HDD should get to about the same temperature (mildly warm). The thermal pad on the inside should give some resistance when closing the lid as it presses on the HDD for contact when closing it.

I take this opportunity to ask one important feature.

In my earlier Himedia 900B, it used to have a feature which was also advertised that the internal HDD goes for a spin down if there is inactivity. This feature will save HDD life as well as work only when needed.

Infact the Himedia 900B menu used to display if the HDD is off and can be activated by using the green button on the remote.

In my new Q10 Pro -  is the same feature included as default ? ie spin down feature.

Probably in the above case the HDD might be continuously running if the library is being updated !

@ Nice Monkey. Ofcourse I know what you explain. I already know the purpose of the pad under the top lid. What I'm trying to say is the temperature difference of HDD for computer use vs Q10 pro use. Maybe the reason is as rdksrk2016 suggested (ie spin down). When I attached HDD, even when I do not access HDD for its content, the level of heat is the same. Thus maybe it is not spinned down at all (just guest, not sure)

I am very sure "It never spins down".

You should compare only when used actively as your PC does spin down it. I presumed we were talking about that condition.

Seems even if Himedia 900B is a simple devise it seems to have some very simple features which are good.

WE should take this in the requests list.

Thanks, I compare to the main boot HDD temperature and it is quite the same. The difference is due to spindown of slave HDD in Computer

I had checked with external HDD connected on USB 3.0 ot the Q10 Pro.

The light in the HDD is always on ie the HDD is running continuously.

Ofcourse it is not heated up but warm.

Does it not reduce the lifetime of the HDD ?

HDD's are designed for it, but anyway it does not extend life. It also produces more heat, generates extra noise and consumes extra electricity.
Nothing alarming but  a smart sleeping mode would be better for sure.
