Help please. New owner of q5 English version
« on: April 15, 2015, 12:15:01 AM »
I just received my box and it comes with latest firmware and Xbmc 13.1. I've been trying to download latest helix kodi 14.2 but the download always shows up as a txt file instead of apk file. Can I get instructions on how to set up my new box to get new kodi please ?

Using the pre-installed web browser visit the Kodi download page and download the Kodi apk. Go to the pre-installed file mananger, select the Downloads folder and select the apk.

ThanKs for the reply , your answer was exactly what I kept trying to do however the downloaded file would always end up as a txt file instead of the apk that I clicked to download.  So apparently downloading through the himedia web browser sonething happens that changed the downloaded file to a txt file instead of the apk file.  I was finally able to do it by downloading the same exact file on my computer and putting it on a thumb drive and then installing it via the usb 3.0 port.

The apk is always an apk file, I think the problem is that your computer (Windows I guess?) doesn't recognise apk as a file type, so presumes it's some form of exotic text file.

A bit like the previous reply about Google vs Apple, this is Windows (Microsoft) not recognising a file format for Android (Google) despite it having been around for many years now.

It looks like you didn't understand my response.  The web browser in the q5 is what I initially used to download the apk files that once downloaded turn into txt files.  My computer is what I used to finally resolve the issue by downloading the same apk file which didn't turn it Into a txt file.  So then I put on my usb drive and plugged it into the q5 and successfully installed it from there.  So the problem was with the web browser In the q5 turning the apk download to a txt file.  But I appreciate your response and just hope this can all help others in the future.

I have no idea why that would happen. I have downloaded apks many times (including all versions of Kodi) using the Q5/Q10 browser and they have always stayed as apk files.

Glad you got it sorted though.
