I'm confused about media players
« on: January 08, 2017, 02:13:57 PM »
My Q10 Pro is running Android 7.
By default I'm having 3 options to play movies with:
- wrapper
- kodi
- media center

I didn't manage to convince wrapper to remember SMB or NFS shares. Trick to mount it via adb is throwing an error and I can't figure it out. It seems I broke something in the process and to try again fresh I'll need to reset the box factory default (btw: is possible without flashing the same firmware from an SUB stick via update button?)
I managed to convince Kodi to remember NFS shares over a reboot and that's good enough. I can't use wrapper to play movies this way, but if I choose Kodi player everything is almost good (some shutters lasting couple of seconds and that's definitely not a networking problem as I can easily sustain at least 600mbps while copying large files from my Synology to Q10Pro via NFS).
And I can use Media Center via SMB shares. But subtitle support is terrible! It skips lines starting at the same time as the end of previous line, weird fonts with no contrast over a white image...no matter the settings, it's just not good enough!

Coming back to the question I have to ask: why Himedia ships the firmware with 3 players?
I don't know how wrong I am but here's what I believe:
- wrapper - built as an alternative of Kodi player. But it adds anything? Or is built just for marketing purposes? Anyway it's pitiful it doesn't have a proper support for shares. I know the official answer is Kodi doesn't publish the shares list to other players, but if Kodi Player gets that list, there must be a way.
- Kodi Player - I can see no reasons why this is not the single player on the box. I haven't try it with 3D mkv or bluray/dvd ISOs yet so excuse me if the question is stupid.
- Media Center. I have no clues who builds this app. It sounds almost perfect for someone not looking for a fancy interface. Just that subtitles support is terrible no matter how much I tried to find a good setting! I'm not looking for anything fancier that Media Center's interface, hopefully a newer version will come with a better subtitle support and I will using it exclusively.

Note: from neither players I'm not looking for support for DTS or any fancy sound feature. I'm watching movies only using some Sennheiser headsets and I have no plans to buy a home theatre in the next few years.  Any I thing any player knows how to downsample to a basic stereo over HDMI.

Disclaimer: I'm having this unit for a couple of weeks and I'm just in the learning phase. If any answer was already answered please be kind and send me a link or keywords I can use to find those answers.

wrapper i not a player is link between kodi and himedia player, you have 3 option to playback movie:

1 - media center -> SAMBA(SMB) / NFS / DLNA shared folder -> himediavideoplayer APP
2 -  Kodi -> only SAMBA(SMB) shared folder -> wrapper ->  himediavideoplayer APP
3 - media center -> SAMBA(SMB) / NFS / DLNA shared folder or /HTTP/ VPR -> DVDplayer(kodi core player ), but you must use hi-addon for frequency switch and HD Audio passtrought NOT work.

there is also:
4  Kodi -> only SAMBA/ NFS with password -> wrapper ->  himediavideoplayer APP, but you need Auto_Mount_ShortCut
