Subtitle Question
« on: October 31, 2018, 07:19:04 PM »
So I have two questions regarding subtitles.  Recently, I have noticed that no matter which subtitles I download they always seem to start ok, but then get out of sync as the video plays. Is this an issue with the subtitle creators or is my player causing the issue?  This only started happening recently. I am on CFW 2.06 as I have been since that one came out.

Also I have noticed that when playing subtitles in the Kodi player, there are sometimes colors, or bolded lines or italicized lines when showing lines from off screen characters.

When playing the same exact subtitle file through the wrapper, it seems that none of that formatting shows up. It is all just plain text.  Do I need to update some setting to get it to be like the Kodi player or is that not an option at all?

Thanks!

Kodi internal player is MUCH superior regarding subtitles but there are changes you can make in Himedia player like changing the color and font.

The out of sync issue should be a problem with the subtitles itself, does it happen with both players?

I know I can make changes to override the subtitle file in the HiMedia player but I still lose out on the brackets and music indicators.  In Kodi it shows a symbol of a music note when music is playing or someone is singing. In the wrapper it doesnt show.  As my son is deaf I am just trying to get the most accurate and best experience for him.

Yes the sync issue happens with both players and with multiple subtitle files downloaded from multiple different subtitle servers.  The only time the subtitle stays in sync is on the few files that include it with the video file already.   Any downloaded ones no matter the source or file go out of sync.

Try SubtitleEdit and export .srt subs as Blu-ray .sup subtitle. You will have all the option to customize your subs as you like. Than rename .sup to .ass. Unfortunately due the faulty operation and lack of font type options, this is the best way you can go on HiMedia.

Thanks for the response. So basically there is no way to have the HiMedia player automatically play the srt files in the proper format?

I don't want to customize them, I want them to play as they do in Kodi.

At the moment no. If you don't want to use the Kodi player try MX player.

Cool, thanks for the reply.  I figured as much but was hoping there was some way it could work.

Oh well.  Kodi player it is.  MX player is not good for this box in my opinion.  It is made more for mobile devices with touch screens or mouse usage in my experience and I do have it on all my other android devices as my default player.  It is just not intuitive like the HiMedia Player or Kodi.

You don't have to customize them (but i don't get it, why not if there is an option), if you don't want them, it's just a few click operation.

You can also try Archos Player.

HereIsTom: KODI Player lacks proper freque switching and HD audio support on HiMedia. I thought these are trivial deficiencies by now.

Kodi works fine but the picture quality via the HiMedia player is superior.  So it is a trade-off. If I want the better picture I use HiMedia player. If I want the subtitles to appear with the correct formatting I have to use Kodi player at the expense of the better picture.

It is too complicated for my son.  He just browes via the Kodi and I had it set up to play via the HiMedia player by default.  I had to make Kodi the default player.  Kodi also is able to automatically download the subs when missing and they play in the proper format of the file.

Also not sure what you mean by clicks.  I do not have any mouse or keyboard set up to the player. Remote only.

Yep, none of the Players are "perfect" on these Boxes, but i would never sacrifice the better PQ and the cadence vs. just to get the subtitles in a more convenient  way. KODI plays back everything at the GUI's default 60HZ, so the according stuttering doesn't bother you? Not to tease you by any means, but you have bought a relatively expensive and modern dedicated media player and you won't even have the demand to watch the videos at their proper framerate, when it would be possible?  Possible Workaround: (which maybe even your son could learn) Start the playback once with KODI Player (Menu->"Play Using") than it downloads the subs, after you just quit the playback, and start again with the HiMedia Palyer.  But it's your choice...

I meant to use SubtitleEdit on a PC (Win or Linux), there's no Android version so far...

this, i totally agree.

the native player is better than other players, gotta use it.

subtitles, the described method can also be used with mx pro, which i find easier than using kodi - go in, get subs, get out, return to native player!

I understand what you are saying and for MY box I use the HiMedia Player.

For my disabled son who doesn't care as much about the quality as I do, he just needs the subs to play correctly.  The HiMedia Player does not do that. So for him on HIS box, the Kodi player is the best option because being deaf, the subtitles are more important than the PQ.  There is no option to do any editing on a PC since there isn't one connected at my son's house.   The issue isn't getting the subtitles. It is getting the player to show the various colors and music note symbols and proper brackets when showing off-screen dialogue.  He uses SDH/CC subs not just ones that show the words.  There is a difference.

I have also not noticed any stuttering or cadence issues when using Kodi so I guess I am not sensitive to it and he hasn't let me know of any issues for him so apparently he isn't either.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.
