This is based on the Beta update of pcristi including amongst others "external subtitle download".

Also available via the Futeko simple APK install :

It in fact got me going to bed a bit late as I spend more time on it than planned.
- Use of the download feature is plain and simple to use. It also works very fast. That is really nice.
The first implementation just produced English subs for me, but it found those also for the old movies which I tried.
It is probably still in full development. I see it as a Beta in current state despite the Chinese FW 1.07 being released with it.
- The good news was that the downloaded subs worked right away.
- It is impossible to pick the right entry from the list as no detailed information is made available. The original title gives a lot more indications.
- Downloaded subs go to a matching subdirectory on the internal flash. That is probably a good approach. For the heavy/advanced user with zillions of movies this brings some maintenance tasks with it. It is questionable how well this scales over time for these users without such maintenance (auto wrap folder above upperlimit?)
- Plan myself to move the permanently to be kept subtitles to the traditional place being in the BD/DVD folder or the ISO/MKV/AVI folders with the standard naming convention. The main reasons: keep it all together (backups/copies), better overview which one's are available and universal deployment by multiple players around the house regardless brand/type. Left overs of one time views and unusable downloads to be cleaned up at the same time. As access via Samba Server to this folder worked just fine, this all can neatly be done via a PC remotely.
- The bad news was that the current external subtitle files for specifically DVD were not found anymore. It now looks only for these in the new location aparently. Consider this a glitch which needs to be solved before releasing it. Copying my own external subs to the new location following the convention had them found again as a workaround.
- The real surprise was that language reporting for external subs worked partially (undocumented but yes a requested feature). Using the standard convention for a movie called "mymovie" with an external sub called "mymovie.
ENG.srt results in an external sub to be detected as "
ENG Ex
nternal srt". In fact the field between the two dots seems to be simply copied on front of the label. which is both adequate and flexible. This worked partially only as it worked for my MKV's I tried but not for BD/DVD folders (did not try ISO yet). Note the extra n is still there in external.
