Should I buy a Q5?
« on: April 06, 2016, 10:40:01 AM »
Hi, I'm planning to buy a Himedia Q5. I know Q5 Pro will be out soon, but I'm planning to just get the current model for these reasons:

1. Cheaper (approximately USD100)
2. 4k support up to 4k30p, which is also the max that my AVR and 4k TV can support. Both my AVR and TV are 2014 models hence a little bit outdated.
3. I'm afraid if I buy the current generation HDMI 2.0 TV boxes that outputs 4k60p, my TV may not support it. Or maybe there will be auto resolution switching issues. Please tell me if this is not the case.

My question to you all is this:

1. Does current 4k videos run well with the Q5 outputting 4k30p or 4k24p?
2. Does Q5 output HEVC 4k30p or 4k24p videos well?
3. What happens when I run a AVC/HEVC 4k60p video? Will Q5 run it well? Heck, can my 4k30p/4k24p TV even show anything?
5. Is 4k videos watchable at 4k30p or 4k24p? Judder? Artifacts?
6. My AVR is only capable of 5.1. Does Q5 have any trouble to passthrough Dolby and DTS 5.1 via HDMI?
7. I will also game occasionally (mostly MAME). Does Q5 run games well? Does it work if I connect a wireless gamepad to it? What about 2 wireless gamepads?
8. Would it be better if I get the newer Himedia H8? It's slighly more expensive at USD120, but doesn't have the PQ engine.
9. Is it able to fully access network shared folders?
10. Does it play 4k videos downloaded from YouTube? I suppose this requires VP9 decoding; is Q5 capable of this?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Q5 Pro won't be much more expensive than Q5 4K3D. It is more powerful hardware and supports the latest formats (4K60, 10bit especially), which will be increasingly important.

I advise waiting for Q5 Pro.

1. Yes, but there isn't much 4K30 or 4K24 material.
2. Yes. as above.
3. It either won't play, or it will play very jerkily.
4.
5. Yes, they play well.
6. No trouble. It passes 5.1 audio excellently from all codecs.
7. It's not great for games but most/all games will run. H8 is better for games, it's more powerful.
8. For games, yes. For video, no. Video format support and quality will be better on Q5 4K3D / Q5 Pro.
9. Yes.
10. Yes. 4K30 / 4K24.
