Himedia Q5 4k3D SPDIF Audio Passthrough
« on: February 22, 2016, 11:38:52 AM »
Hi all,

i want to buy a Sonos Playbar and i want to connect it to my Himedia Q5 4K3D through SPDIF connection (the only one available); this soundbar supports only Dolby Digital 5.1 (not DTS). Now if i use this settings (with the Sonos playbar connected directly to the Himedia Q5 4K3D through SPDIF)

Himedia Q5 4K3D:                           Kodi:

HDMI Output: Close                       Enable Passthrough
SPDIF Output: RAW                        Dolby Digital 5.1 Capable Receiver (checked)
HBR Output: AUTO                         Enable Dolby Digital Transcoding

and i don't check DTS Capable Receiver, i just want to know (because the Sonos Playbar is expensive) if i can reproduce Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track correctly and transcode DTS track to DD 5.1 for films that has only DTS track.

Thank for your help.

Michele

NO,  only kodi with internal player can  transcode DTS track to DD 5.1.
You must buy a Playbar  with HDMI input or  box support  kodi like: H8, amlogic , rasperry pi ecc....

Thank you Looun.
This mean that i can play correctly Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track, but if a movie has only DTS audio track i have to set SPDIF Output to LPCM to get audio from soundbar?

yes but ONLY DOWNMIX to stereo LPCM and i suppose limited to 48hz.
SPDIF not support 5.1 PCM , only HDMI support PCM multichannel.

Also i don't  know if SPDIF with auto switch between DD and PCM(DTS) or you must go every time on setting and change RAW <> PCM.

Ok, i think that i have to change the settings every time.

Why the himedia player can't transcode DTS to DD 5.1 like the kodi player?

Futeko this functionality can be implemented in the future?

Thank you.

NO,  himedia box not use kodi internal player DVDplayer.

If you need this feature , you must  buy a full KODI box ! no way!
like: H8, amlogic , rasperry pi ecc....

Ok thanks looun.

Thank you

The new Q5 / Q10 Pro will use a wrapper for Kodi, same as Q5/Q10 4K3D.

There are very few Kodi boxes where features like 7.1 audio and 3D work from internal player Kodi, by using a wrapper it allows you to use all chipset features with Kodi.

Getting all HiSilicon chipset features working natively in Kodi is being worked on, but it won't be ready at launch (or soon after). It's a big job and will involve work from the Kodi dev side too.

I was asking this question in the H8 forum and someone said it probably wouldn't work. I ended-up testing Kodi using a macbook and can confirm that Kodi running on a Macbook with SPIDF connection to an AVR can transcode DTS to DD (called AC3 in Kodi). I would love to know if the H8 can actually do this since apparently the Q5 cannot due to it not running native Kodi.

Based on the advice in this thread, I looked into using a Raspberry Pi 3 setup and that is the direction I am going to head. I already ordered a Raspberry Pi 3 (just came out and is much faster than the 2 apparently) and the Digi+ from HiBerry (it is a board that has the SPIDF optical port). Anyway, best of luck to the folks who want to try with the H8 and hope the Q5 gets this feature in the future... a lot of PlayBar owners would love to be able to do this!
