No video after stopping playback
« on: July 03, 2019, 08:34:34 PM »
Hi all,

I've got an issue with my Q5 Pro I was hoping someone could help me with. I've done some searching but haven't come across anything that helped.

It seems whenever I stop playing a video the Q5 Pro loses video signal and I have to turn it off and back on to browse videos again. This started in January. I only use the built in video player. It happens whether it's HDR or SDR, and irrelevant of video resolution. It doesn't matter if it's a USB drive or through my NAS. I had been using firmware 2.0.9 so I upgraded to the latest CFW at the time, which was 2.1.2. That didn't help.

Hopefully there's a way to fix this! I appreciate any help.

Anyone have any ideas? This is the second Q5 to crap out on me. I really like the box when it works, but I don't want to keep replacing it.

It seems more of a software issue. How did you upgrade, with the reset button method? After you stop the video if you press the home button on the remote what happens?

Thanks for your response! I used the reset button method. After I press the home button I lose the video signal and it doesn't come back. When I hit Power on the remote it turns off, so it hasn't locked up - I just lost video. My AVR responds that there is no HDMI video signal.

It just happened one day out of the blue in January. I hadn't made any changes. I was on 2.0.9 at that point. I upgraded to CFW 2.1.2 to see if it would help but it does the same thing.

Have you tried connecting it directly to the TV? Does the same thing happen? Maybe there's some CEC issue...

I have not. I should've thought of that, basic troubleshooting lol. I have CEC disabled on my AVR since I don't have any luck with it. I'll give this a shot in the next day or two and report back. Thanks.

Last night I plugged my Q5 Pro directly into the TV, and I moved HDMI ports on my receiver. I also tried a video off of a USB drive instead of my NAS. Every time it was the same issue - when I stop playback and try to go back to the menus, I lose video signal. Every single time. Very frustrating.

Any ideas?  It would be so nice to have this working properly again.

I guess you have tried most things, have you tried a different HDMI cable?
Does it do this with any other video players (such as the built in Kodi player)?

Just for a test, try connecting using RCA cables and does the problem still exist?

Maybe you have already tried this, install the latest OFW or the last known firmware that was working for you (fresh install method) and start from scratch. Test before making any changes.

If the box has just started doing this overnight and no changes were made, it does not look positive.

Good luck!

I've tried different HDMI cables. I upgraded to the latest firmware available a couple months ago using the fresh install, and it didn't help. I don't have composite inputs, my equipment only accepts HDMI or I'd give that a shot. Maybe I can bring it to a friends and test it out.

I tried testing through Kodi but I couldn't get Kodi to see my NAS. I'll copy some media onto a USB drive to test soon. I don't care for Kodi but if it works it'll be less frustrating than the way it works now.

I agree that things don't look positive but figured I'd post in case someone had an idea I hadn't thought of. The Q5 Pro is the best device I have found for watching local media, but it's the second Himedia device to crap out on me so I don't want to keep wasting money replacing these things. I'm hoping the rumoured new Nvidia Shield addresses some of the issues I have with it so that I can get one of those. I appreciate your response!

I did more playing around with the Q5 Pro this weekend. When I set the Q5 to 1080p instead of 4K, I can watch and stop any video and I don't lose video signal. The only problem with this is that 4K videos get scaled to 1080p as well. I set it back to 4K, and when I stop playing a video I lose signal again.

So I installed the auto frame rate/res patch to see if it helped. Sure enough, it did! I can watch any video, stop it, and select another video without losing signal and having to reboot every time. Awesome! It's back to the way it should be. Why that fixed the problem, and why it happened in the first place, I have no idea. And I don't really care I suppose lol, since it's working the way it should!
