Kodi 16 TrueHD Dolby Digital Plus
« on: November 10, 2015, 02:08:20 PM »
Good morning.

I am confused if HiMedia Q5 Kodi will ever have TrueHD and DTS-HD 7.1 passthrough.

Does this depend on HiMedia (custom Kodi) or Kodi dev team?

I see Nvidia Shield TV now has DTS-HD and TrueHD passthrough (latest firmware)
but now they said if depends on Kodi team.

Hard to predict the future, but it seems that for the next year or more, the only boxes that will have  Kodi + 7.1 are those with custom Kodi.

Am I correct in my statement?

Nvidia Shield TV have DTS-HD and TrueHD passthrough ONLY with native player  NOT KODI !
There are not android BOX support HD audio passthrough with ufficial kodi only with custom version like himedia h8.
From android M will be support from OS only DTS-HD passthrough,  TrueHD passthrough there aren't andorid os API yet .

Bitstreaming is coming though to nVidia Shield, probably with Kodi 17 Alpha.

Soon will be time to get an Nvidia Shield TV then

Same here, don't seems that we are going to get all bugs fixed like  autoframe without wrapper.

I would suggest that by the time Shield gets 3D MVC and bitstreaming it will appear old and overpriced compared to newer hardware.

Himedia H8 firmware continues to progress and already has 3D, 7.1 Audio, auto frame rate (24/50/60) in Kodi without wrapper. It will continue to improve.

Himedia Q5/Q10 has incredible picture quality, I expect this will always be better than Shield. The HiSilicon chipset is simply better for video than the Tegra in Shield. The Kodi wrapper solution is not perfect, but it works and it delivers excellent 3D + 7.1 HD-Audio now. Not probably in six months. Q5/Q10 are also still being worked on and firmware will continue to improve.

A bit on a tangent, but next year (not before March) I expect Himedia to release a new Q5, using the same hardware but reduced spec / reduced cost (no LCD, no SATA, different casing etc). It will use the same firmware. This new product will guarantee continued Q5 firmware development well into 2016 and beyond.

Why HiMedia H8 has Kodi with TrueHD 7.1 passthrough and Q5 hasn't?

Chipset?

So confusing with the reason why some boxes have custom Kodi and some don't.

Even from the same company.

Yes, chipset.

The base firmware for all these boxes (and for all electronic products - phones etc) comes from the manufacturer of the chipset. So certain core features will depend on the chipset.

In the case of Himedia Q5/Q10/M3, these have a HiSilicon chipset and HiSilicon have chosen not to develop for Kodi. Their Android player however is excellent so HiMedia call it as a wrapper from Kodi.

In the case of Himedia H8, it has a Rockchip chipset and Rockchip have developed in-house enhancements for Kodi to give Kodi internal Rockchip support. So HiMedia can develop custom Kodi with hardware chipset support built in.

Yes, I was aware that HiMedia had chosen not to develop for Kodi, By in my opinion this is a mistake, They offer one of the best boxes on the market as well as great firmware support, Kodi would be the icing on the cake, it's a damn shame really they are not going to do this. :-X

That's not what I said.

Himedia are developing for Kodi, hence the custom Kodi for H8.

Q5/Q10/M3 are based on a chipset that is ~ 18 months old. At that time Kodi was less important for Android / media boxes so HiSilicon (same parent but different to Himedia) didn't build Kodi support into their chipset specification.

Rockchip (3368 in H8) are exactly the same. They were renowned for very poor Kodi support (i.e. caring not at all about Kodi) for several years until the 3368 chipset released this summer.

Himedia have done well with the Hisilicon chipset used for Q5/Q10/M3. It is the best chipset for image quality and they have developed a wrapper solution for Kodi that delivers that superior quality in Kodi.

I am sure that in future most chipset manufacturers will recognise the importance of Kodi and attempt to deliver hardware support for their products in Kodi.

Himedia told me that there will be new HiSilicon products but not soon. Based on past Himedia release schedules my best guess would be Chinese Hi3798C V200 hardware in June 2016 followed by International hardware September 2016.

I heard Kodi 17 (NOT Kodi 16) will have support for TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus passthrough for all Android.

Has anybody heard anything about team Kodi rewriting the audio passthrough experience for a Android?
