I would recommend you read this thread carefully and try again (thanks to @OlivierQC):
http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=932.0

If you still have issues you need to be very specific about the HDD, if pre-formatted, what system you are connecting to and what techniques you have tried and what is happening on your system.
I found the USB 3.0 plug at the rear makes the Q10 Pro work fine as a slave (external drive) when plugged into a Windows 10 PC.
A "does not work" is not enough information for anyone to be able to help you.

If you wanted to plug an external hard drive into the Q10 Pro you would use one of the side USB ports (of course).

Phil181 is correct. The USB 3.0 female socket at the back is goog only for connecting to a PC where Q10 pro will be recognized as an external drive.

If you have an external 3.0 usb drive you need to attached it to the USB 3.0 male socket at the sides (the last usb socket near the back). Or if not the other ramining USB 2.0 sockets.

USB3 uses extra pins above USB2. If these make a bad contact then you get a USB2 connection even when using USB3 ports on both ends.
Try swapping the cable. The cable may work fine with other devices but still be the problem. I have seen a lot of cases where USB3 works at USB2 speed.

There is also a problem of External HDD via the USB3-port not being detected consistently. Both USB2 ports don't have this problem. There is a bug report for that.

Please read this.

I think you should really forget about using USB3 above 3m. Even with USB2 it is a challenge.

What is your native language?

Cable length is a problem!

you say its a 4tb drive so a 3.5

Its a USB drive you say.

Does it have separate power? You need to connect it.

If not power from 1 usb port ill not suffice. Ether you have to connect the dedidicated power adapter or connect a Y cable (power + data) cable into it like this one. https://www.amazon.it/Delock-data-power-cable-65306/dp/B001BHVMIU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468696874&sr=8-1&keywords=usb+y+cable
