4k picture 'jumping' [solved]

Q10 Pro arrived this morning - thanks Futeko for processing so quickly

Picture working perfectly on e.g. 1080p at 60hz, but if I choose one of the 4k options which are compatible with my TV (Panasonic TX-58AX802B) - so anthing up to and including 30mhz) then the picture starts to jump every couple of seconds or so.

I've only had a quick play around so far so can't decide if it's an issue with the Q10 or the TV trying to change resolutions for some reason, but while it is usable you wouldn't want to watch anything on it

Hard to describe so I'll take a video shortly and stick it on Youtube - but any ideas?

It should be silky smooth.

Is this for all video formats? Can you give details of files affected? What app are you using for playback?

It's not when just playing video, it's for everything; as soon as e.g. 2160p 30hz is selected in the settings the picture starts to jump, if I re-select 1080p 60hz the jumping stops.

Soon as the children stop hogging the TV I'll put a video on Youtube

(note you can also see my phone camera trying to focus - that's not what I'm talking about. There are several 'jumps' in the footage).

I'll try the HDMI cable that came with the Q10 later to start ruling some things out.

Are you actually playing the video via youtube?  Is it possible internet lag?

EDIT : ok just watched you vid i see what you mean.  I have just set mine to 2160p @ 30 and its steady as a rock.  Thats connected to a Samsung 55 JS8500



I have downloaded a few 4k movies and playing via kodi and its smoother than a baby's behind.

However I cannot get hdr content to work.  Sound with black screen.  Also its not sending signal to my tv to auto switch to 3d mode which is rather annoying.

Apart from that im loving the box.

This is potentially a nasty one? Cable quality could be as source as changing to 4K uses far more bandwidth.

If you play something like music, is the sound then interrupted and comes back again or does it stay fluent?
if it is a HDMI capabilities issue then the sound probably is gone for a moment.

Yes cable quality was my first thought - I do have a number of different ones in the house so I'll try some of them later on. I'll check the sound idea too - using optical at the moment but I'll change my setup to pick up the sound via HDMI.

Will report back! Assuming I can sort this 4K issue out I'm impressed with it so far PQ wise.

Ok, problem solved - it is indeed the HDMI cable. If I use the cable included in the box (which does seem very thick and of a good quality) the jumping goes away - so I just need to buy a suitable replacement of the right length!

With cable length the quality constraints increase linearly. Long cables need a matching quality and each new HDMI standard required more bandwidth hence improved cabling. The longer the cable the earlier one may hit quality  limits.

Yes, obviously. This is the main reason for bundling a cable. First question asked will be "did you use the cable provided' when troubles are encountered.
