Using Q10 with a VPN
« on: December 16, 2015, 03:12:16 PM »
Hi all, Just wondering if any of you are using the Q10 with a VPN. I can get my VPN connection working no problem but not as always on. Whenever I select 'Always On' the list is just 'NONE' even though I have set up several profiles (for different locations). As you can imagine it is a PITA to manually connect every time, not so much for me but for the Missus  ::)  Basically I want the box to ONLY connect through the VPN, any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not an expert in this but have you rooted the box? For the setting to stick the box may need to be rooted.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. No I haven't rooted my box, it's as it came from yourselves. I may give it a go as it would be handy. If / when I do I'll post the results.

Rooted box, still exactly the same. None of my VPN profiles show in the list to save as auto on.

Hi All,

Just thought I'd let you know what I've found regarding the VPN situation.

It would seem that it is not possible to set a PPTP VPN to auto on in Android, apparently this is due to Google playing almighty lord & master. They say that PPTP VPN connections are not safe therefore it is a 'feature' of Android not to allow the auto start feature. Hmmm, why not let the end user decide, after all a PPTP is better than no VPN?

No worries I hear you say... I could just set up a L2TP VPN connection and presto it appears in the auto start list... but wait... it's not that easy, well at least with the Q10 and IPVanish it's not! For some reason, unknown to me, an L2TP (PSK) connection will not connect. I have tried all sorts of settings to try and get a connection to work but to no avail, perhaps it's a feature that HiMedia haven't implemented or have removed from Android for streamlining puposes? If anyone knows please tell us.

Anyway, after hours of trying I gave up, built myself a Linux PC to act as a gateway and now everything on my network goes out through the VPN, sorted! It's not ideal as it's another PC sitting around, using electricity, taking up space, getting dusty etc etc but it is a total solution.
