himedia clipping whites
« on: August 13, 2019, 02:50:15 AM »
If I display a contrast pattern on usb on my tv I can see flashing bars higher than reference white (flashing bar 235). But if I play the same pattern on the himedia player all bars past 235 are clipped. This means this player clips whites higher than reference white resulting in probable loss of detail. Anyone know of a fix or workaround?

Have you tried to adjust the screen size in settings?

so far i know, you must adjust TV to DONT flash over 235, adjusting contrast. Normaly you put contrast in TV to max, and then go down step by step until only the patters under 235 flashes. Maybe, you have 2 settings in TV, one for day and one for night, as i have.
I have calibrated it so for me, and i never touch the settings for this in HiMedia itself. I play the calibratingfiles from NAS to HiMedia throug AVR, maybe this is the diference.
But thinking about it, i dont know if you can calibrate any USB or HDMI enter in your TV for separate, normaly there is no way for this.

Screen size won't affect the clipping. What I'm referring to is the contrast flashing bars patterns present in calibration disks.

I thought so too that 235 and over should not flash, but the gurus at avsforums think otherwise. I contacted Ted (ConnecTeDDD at avs) the author of the calibration disk I'm using to check this and he argues to leave headroom over 235 to prevent any lose of detail.

I also play my files from NAS to himedia and the contrast pattern shows clipping that is not present when playing from usb. I have the himedia connected to an lg oled c8 which has the same picture presets present in all inputs ie. hdmi, usb, internal apps, etc. So in my case I use an sdr preset for day (expert bright) and another for night use (expert dark).

Ted also recommended turning off the imprex engine which changes the original content. With imprex disabled, the q10 pro displays accurate output on ycbcr colorspace apparently. I've checked this with Ted's disk, a videoforge pro and calman software. Anyway I guess the white clipping is a hardware limitation, don't know if a new firmware can fix this.

Can you give a link to these patterns?

You can buy them at displaycalibrations.com. Get the media files instead of the bluray iso since the menu is not displayed properly in the himedia player.
