« on: September 13, 2016, 06:09:34 AM »
Can anyone please explain when I connect my Q10Pro to my Sony TV the display shows at switch on 1080p/10bit and my Popcorn A400 (approx. 2 years old and older technology) shows under the same circumstances 1080p/12bit..
Thanks

Old dedicate player (Popcorn A400) have video output 12bit  x.v.Color.
Android device (Q10/Q5 Pro) at this time know video output 10bit YCbCr

Can anyone please explain when I connect my Q10Pro to my Sony TV the display shows at switch on 1080p/10bit and my Popcorn A400 (approx. 2 years old and older technology) shows under the same circumstances 1080p/12bit..

Many thanks for the reply and the links I understand a bit more now. Both players give excellent pictures, but are slightly different in presentation, the A400 is smoother and less processed whereas the Himedia is more punchy in colours but in some cases more processed with some grain, where the A400 scores most is the digital output quality, which is much better and not restricted to 48khz, pity it can't play HEVC/60Hz files.

It is indeed a player restriction. Has been reported by me as part of my total review/tutorial. Video material with 12-bit 1080P is very rare though and not considered a serious drawback. There is a topic about this.

It is not an Android restriction in general. There are other Android based media players that at least claim support for 8, 10 and 12 bit Deep Color. Many older players had no problems with it either. Have an Eminent EM7345 supporting 8, 10 and 12-bit at 1080P60.

Don't  confuse video output with video encoding, all dedicate blu-ray know Deep color (30/36/48-bit) a.k.a  RGB 10/12/16 bit.
Video material  1080p 8bit encode like blu-ray disc can be display in 10/12/16bit video output.
