(BUG) Subtitles in Kodi
« on: December 18, 2016, 08:32:17 AM »
I've found another problem - I don't know if it was on previous firmware (because I just bought q5 pro and I installed ANDROID 7 + 2.0.0).

To the point - there is a problem with srt subtitles, some lines are not showing in the himedia player (and in KODI with wrapper - pure kodi 16.1 works fine, same with PC and the player built into TV).

The problematic subs are the ones that start at the same time as others end - example ->

Code: [Select]
167
00:16:01,500 --> 00:16:03,800
VISIBLE

168
00:16:03,900 --> 00:16:07,500
VISIBLE

169
00:16:07,500 --> 00:16:09,100
NOT VISIBLE

170
00:16:09,200 --> 00:16:12,000
VISIBLE

I've tested it on several files that had such type of subs, additionally succesfully artificially replicated the problem, so it's pretty repetitive.
I've tried changing sub coding, using 24p mode. Tried every possible srt coding (ANSI, UTF8, UNICODE), same problem.
If anyone know how to fix it or could report this problem to himedia I would be grateful.

Greets

Hi guys

I thought I'd create a new topic for this issue as a couple persons reported it in another thread. I am facing the exact same issue as well. I thought initially that it was a problem with the subtitle file but when it started affecting all my movies I concluded it was a bug introduced by the latest firmware.

Can you please pass this on to Futeko and include a fix in the next patch?

Thanks!

Bad subtitle, not Kodi/HiMedia problem.
Error  checking

Error  fixed

After fix

Code: [Select]
167
00:16:01,500 --> 00:16:03,800
VISIBLE

168
00:16:03,900 --> 00:16:06,500
VISIBLE

169
00:16:06,535 --> 00:16:09,100
NOT VISIBLE - fixed

170
00:16:09,200 --> 00:16:12,000
VISIBLE

In case of .vtt subtitles fixed like this 00:16:06,600 --> 00:16:09,100

Code: [Select]
167
00:16:01,500 --> 00:16:03,800
VISIBLE

168
00:16:03,900 --> 00:16:07,500

As I said, I thought it was a case of bad subtitles as well initially, however practically ALL my movies/shows have been affected by this issue.
Unless all subtitles on Subscene are now corrupted, I'd say it's an issue with the new firmware...

General speaking all subtitles have error, like OCR, to long line, etc, but for to short display and overlapping player can't do workaround to display.
Your example is vtt subtitle, witch are not native support on HiSilicon/HiMedia and may other Android device.
Between I check few srt subtitles from Subscene and not have to short display and overlapping errors  :).

Sorry I didn't clearly specify in my first post, but I was quoting some other guy who originally posted about this issue in another thread.  ::)

In my case I only use SRT files.

I didn't face the issue for subtitles embedded in movies though.

Well, I know that the properly made subs shouldn't have overlapping timings, but in reality some have (usually for TV series) and most players (including pure kodi) manages to display them just fine, so players not having problems with showing them is the standard.
In this case, the subs aren't literally overlapping - simply ending and starting next the same milisecond, more like touching than overlapping.
Even the media player built into my TV manages to show those subs, so I suppose the way to fix it is simple for developers (simple as auto delaying overlapping subs by 1ms) and it would be cool if the native himedia player wouldn't struggle in such cases.

It's not one of those "fix something you failed to do properly", but one of the "add this to make the player better in real life, imperfect usage".

BTW

It's not Kodi problem (it works fine), just the himedia's media center and Kodi with himedia's wrapper.

Watched an episode of Modern family last night which had the subtitles embedded and again the problem happened. This is extremely annoying and it's definitely a bug introduced by the latest firmware. Please Futeko can you pass it on to Himedia?

Thanks!

For subtitle lines not showing, already reported.
Reasons not showing lines: too short pause and overlapping.
Adjust with subtitle workshop until we get a fix.
Tested only on srt files.

Can't adjust too short pause problem (like 3 milliseconds) with subtitle workshop, because it's not overlapping, just too short. Can someone tell me if this problem exist on the 1.0.9 fw as well?

I can say that this problem did not exist with FW 1.0.8.
Now I'm with fw 2.0 and I hope that will be fixed in the next fw, otherwise I will downgrade because I use a lot the sub .srt and for me it's a big problem.

Based on the samples we've tested, I think it is.

If you want to send a sample which has the problem on previous firmwares I'm happy to test it for you.

Subtitle timeout tests:
Simple .srt file: http://ge.tt/73KThAk2 (Just see the count numbers in order in the beginning of each line).
Embedded in video: https://cloud.mail.ru/public/FqB3/NsaSg5n5M

And the another old subtitle issue: "Character Line spacing offset with y, p, etc letters": https://www.dropbox.com/s/b4w4oh654xdlbni/line%20spacing%20test%20sub.srt?dl=0 (As you will see this one is still not resolved...) Heres the thread of this issue: http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=1967.msg16440;topicseen#msg16440
